So I just got a new carpet for my 73 charger, Would the best route be to lay down insulation and then a layer of padding and then the carpet? or just the carpet over the insulation. Should I use a heat shield padding? Any recommendations on brands that people prefer? Hushmat looks good, but is it really worth the price tag

You'll have to see what works best. I did mine last year and originally doubled up the padding (no hushmat). Problem was the double padding was too thick around the trans tunnel and distorted the fit of the carpet so I had to revert back to single layer of padding. I was able to line the floor pans with double padding, but it took some work around the gas pedal mounting area to keep it from looking like the pedal was sunk in a hole. Also, you'll need to back off the thickness near the rear seat or it'll be hell getting it to hook in.

This summer i def plan on putting in some hushmat (or similar) once I get rid of my flowmasters.

sure thing, hushmat is ordered, not sure what to use for padding yet... but got enough to keep me occupied. where did you go for your padding, anything special?

My carpet kit came uninstalled with my car. It's a TrimParts kit and the car came with some basic 1/8" or 1/4" thick grey padding. Not sure if it came w the carpet kit or if he bought it seperate. Kinda like this stuff...

It did quiet the interior down a bit but I've heard so many good things about the hushmat products and the like that I'll probably do that this summer.

I just did mine, I also used trimparts carpet. I bought Bonded Logic insulation from Summit Racing, it is foil backed on both sides and around a 1/2 thick. The glue "sticky stuff" that they sell for it is allot like 3M's contact cement and works very well, installation is quick and easy. The foil on both sides makes it easy to form to the floor for a tight installation and it is very affordable compared to the other brands like Dynomat. Good luck
