Just picked up a 73 with a 340 in it on the cheap. It has me kind of confused. The vin and fender tag indicate it came with a 400. It has a second tag with the letter H on it. Motor looks to be untouched with factory exhaust in place. As old as these cars are who knows what someone did.

This is an SE and the 340 was not available in an SE. The second tag is an inspection tag and has nothing to do with how the car is equipped. Someone did a complete swap it looks like.

Years ago I had a 73 Rallye 400 car that had the k-frame heavily modified for a Hemi, since 20 something me could not afford a Hemi I bought a small block k-member and installed a 340. Car is likley still running around with a small block in it.

can you tell what year the 340 is, block stamp reads Jm 340 R 41229218

1973 340 assembled on Nov 9th 1972. Your car was build In late Feb or early march of 1973. Door tag will tell you when exactly.

That is a factory Big Block car as it has the correct inner fender on the passenger side with the big mat. I wonder if they went to the trouble of putting the correct small block K-member in it along with the 340?

P 400 would have also had factory dual exhaust, which helps with the 340 conversion.

...and the authentic, original look.

May I add a tidbit here ? From personal experience back in the day. After the first "gas shortage" there were instances where big engine cars swapped for smaller engines. Could be the case here.
