Fuel Filter

Nope. Fuel pump to carb is just that. Goes from the pump to the carb. "Front to rear" would be from the tank to the pump

????????????

ok I got ya. So where is the fuel pump located? Obviously somewhere in between, can you access it from under the hood or is it somewhere under the car?

Pump is on the right front corner of the motor......assuming that your car still uses a mechanical pump and not an electric

I just took my tank to a buddy who owns a fab shop here in town, he said he's made gas tanks for custom applications before so I took him mine....we had a few questions, and this may not be anything that anybody would know, but is there a purpose for all the recessions/indentions on and around the tank? Of course I'm going to take measurements of the space where the tank was located when I get home, but wondered if anybody knew of the importance of this as well as the way there is a lip going all around the middle of the tank. The recessions on each side for the straps to hold the tank up are obvious, but other than that I wasn't sure of the importance that the new tank resembles the old in those regards. Thanks

I'm sure the ribs are to give the top and bottom some rigidity and keep it from expanding and making noise.

that makes sense....so since he's going to make this tank out of a thicker material and it will be stainless steel, do you think the ribs in the tank are of the same importance?

I guess he could possibly put a baffle inside to help hold the tank together. Maybe I missed something ....... But why not just buy a new tank?:edgy:

Well he's going to save me a LOT of money if he can build one that I can use, all he's going to charge me for is the material, which is not much since they buy it in bulk

I concur. Unless he can make you a new tank for under $140 +/- I'd just buy a new tank.

Course of you're hell bent to have a custom tank...........:edgy:

He's built tanks before, there are some guys from around here that pull trucks in national competitions and he builds tanks for them, but like I said those are complete custom applications and this is something that has a particular design from the factory.....we were just trying to figure out the rhyme and reason behind parts of the design

Oh yeah I definitely wouldn't even consider the hassle if it were around that range.....the cost of the material he's got is only like 50 or 60 bucks so it's gonna save me quite a bit

Well sounds neat..........a custom fuel tank. Post up some pics. of the fabrication and have your buddy keep templets of all the pcs. in case he decides to mass produce them when all the enquiries come pouring in. Get it ?:edgy::grin:

lol nice....ok another quick question!! I'm about to order a 3/8" sending unit, however I've come across three different sources with three very different prices....a sending unit from year one is about 145, one from what appears to be a pretty reputable source on ebay is 90, and yet another on ebay is only about 50 bucks. What gives here? The budget is extremely important here but am I sacrificing quality by going with the cheap one?

Well, I've been reading your last few posts and have been wondering if you have REALLY sat down and thought out a sound game plan for how you're going to build your car and what you want it to be when it's done.

I'm NOT trying to make you feel bad, or criticize your ideas, but in my VERY humble opinion, you're going down a path that's not going to give you the results that I think you're looking for.

Trying to match a reproduction stock style fuel sending unit to a custom built fuel tank will be challenging at best, because the factory style sending units were designed to work with factory style fuel tanks.

As far as your question about the price differences on the 3/8" fuel sending units goes, it all boils down to the quality of the materials used to make the part and where they were manufactured. The cheaper units are usually made in China or a similar location, while the nicer units are made in Canada, or the USA.

Once again, I'm NOT trying to rain on your parade and I DO know how important a budget is, but trying to save money at the expense of putting parts together that weren't designed to work together is almost always a bad plan. Been working on these cars since the early 70's, so I guess that you could say that "I've been there, done that".

I'll shut up now and wish you the best of luck on your car.

Also it won't do you any good to install a 3/8 pickup unless you replace all your fuel line with 3/8.

Understood. Yes, the 3/8" lines are already on their way, thus my reasoning for the 3/8" pickup purchase.....just wondering about the quality of the different sources, I thought someone here might have some experience purchasing any of these items and was looking for their input. My plan first and foremost is reliability now with a foundation that provides the potential for future performance improvement, thus my replacement of the fuel tank/lines in general and Then the decision to upgrade the size, based on talking to you guys and reading up on a ton of articles on the net.

The only reason I asked about the tank because I know the guy would build it with quality that I would never get anywhere else, just because that's the way he is and the way they do things at their shop, And he would be using stainless steel so I would know that it would never rust and would just last a lot longer in general. I know that the dimensions would have to be identical, as well as the overall shape of the tank and placement of the sending unit and filler tube, but once again I just thought someone might know from experience the reasoning behind the ribs and indentions and little things about the appearance of the tank. I may not go with that though, since it might put me behind in my plans of getting the car back together so we'll see. Regardless, I'll keep you guys posted if u want. Thanks again for all your input

Can't help with the senders. Could be there is one manufacturer and some vendors make more profit than others.
