I have a new wiring harness for my 1966 charger. I am removing the instrument cluster to access the harness and clean things up. I have read that the fuel gauge has an internal voltage limiter that should be replaced. A solid-state limiter from RTE seems to be the best choice. To install the RTE limiter do you need to open the fuel gauge to disable the original limiter?

Yes.. You will need to open up the fuel gauge and disable the internal mechanical regulator. This video may be helpful..

Thank you for the reply and video link. This is just what I was searching for. Has anyone here done this mod and have any tips? Firsthand advice is always appreciated.

I converted to the solid state limiter back in 2010 but unfortunately didn't occur to me to document or photograph any of the process. First off, disconnect the battery before removing the gauge cluster.
If I recall correctly, the terminals for 12 V input and 5 volt output will still get used on the REAR threaded terminals with the new solid state regulator.
I just cut out the old mechanical regulator's bi-metalic strip along the wrapped wire on it. Don't disturb the wire for the fuel gauge's bi-metallic strip on that center screw ! I used some 2-56 or 4-40 machine screw's and nuts to replace the drilled out rivets.

Thank you for the information. I will remove the old regulator parts you describe and connect the RTE to replace it.
I have the gauge cluster out of the car and will take it apart tonight.

I'm always happy to help, these are my videos and yes I have done a lot of conversions, my contact info is on my public website Toddsrestorations.com
Feel free to call me or email me, my Fb page has lots and lots of pics of the work I do. It's also Todd's Restorations may get some questions answered there as well. Todd

Thank you for the reply. I have been to your website for information when I started work on the car a few months ago. A huge amount of good useful information.
