cant get this racepump mechanical pump to pump fuel, narrowed it down to either the pushrod or the cam lobe (do some cams come witht he mechanical pump lobe removed for electric pumps?)

so i am going to sell it all and go an electric pump, need some recommendaions ideas.

i want it to be fairly quiet, i mght mount at the fuel tank somewhere ( or where do you recommend)
my engine is a 505 BB 12.1 comp. i currently have all 1/2" lines so a pump with 1/2" inlets outlets would be good.

stock fuel tank.

also recommend a regulator to go with it i am pumping 2 dual quad eddies.

thanks in advance guys

All cams are the same, check the push rod,it should be 3.200 give or take a few thousand's.If you have the correct pump pressure wise, you don.t need an electric pump. The Hemi mechanical pump works well with this.

Since you made the decision to run that pump, I have done a little research on it. They actually need a "pre pump" if you will. They ain't good at pickin fuel up, in other words. I know. Stupid as it sounds, that's what I found out. Their main purpose is for like road racing and such, and they require a fuel pressure source themselves to operate like they are designed to. Basically they are not a PUMP per say. They are more of a pressure and flow increasing device. Does that make sense? Long story short, I don't think it's really made for what you are trying to do with it.

take a look at maliory pumps.fairly low noise and come in many diff sizes.(havve run several myself with no probs)also, look at jeg part #555-15902,its a copy of the edelbrock pump and some other racers tell me its a very good pump.as far as regulator, just get a good brand name and make sure it hase the ports you need.

yeh my pushrod length is 3.242 which is what was recommended, i was told the cam lobe should have .375" lift but i have not checked this yet, im over this pump haha

will an electric pump be setup similiar to this mechanical i had?

i have a fuel line from tank to a filter, then to pump upto reg. then split for the 2 carbs.

do i mount pump at back of car and regulator in the eng bay?

any info ou guys can provide would be good as i have no knowledge on these. thanks

elec pump should be as close as possible to fuel source and preferably below the pick up point.you should put a filter between the pump and the tank just for security.splitting at the regulator will work, just not ideal.(that requires a return line.)

Benno,
Carter mechanical pump, 3/8" lines and dual Edelbrock carburetors. Motor pulls to 6800 rpm. No return line to tank, no tricks. Sometimes I think we over-engineer our rides...

I agree 100 percent.Had the same setup on a 64 Belvedere a couple years back and it worked flawless

Those Carters are damned good pumps. They suck. In a good way. lol

If it's any use to you, I went electric pump once and switched back to mech. eddy mech pump works great. Just about to upgrade the lines from 3/8" rubber to 3/8" aluminum. Electric pumps are good if you get the gerotor type, regular type are noisy unless your just racing then who cars. if you can't get a mech pump to work then get an electric.

I think the HP Carter like wannadrag brought up will work great for you, but you need to make absolutely certain your fuel pump lobe and rod are in good shape.

I'd say throw a good HP mechanical (Carter or Holley) pump at it and be down the road.

If you want to check for pump pushrod movement, remove the pipe plug and slip a pencil in the hole until it makes contact with the push rod, then have someone crank the engine. You should visually see and feel the appropriate amount of movement. Just don't push too hard and accidentally slip off.

measured cam lobe it is .300 howard from race pumps told me i need .375 for pump to work.
maybe a longer pushrod? can you even get longer ones so i will need one around 3.992

if the lobe is worn down a longer push rod wont help.your stroke will end up too short and mechanical pump wont work right, whatever brand it is.

thats the thing its a brand new cam not even run it yet, im confused

how are you getting your measurement?it should be done as movement of the fuel pump rod in two full rotations of the crank.(cam rotates once for two turns of crank)

That's only .075". That could be mistakes in measurement. I'd say the fuel pump lobe was ok. It's entirely possible you got a defective pump. I know yall said you tested it off the engine, but did you put a gauge on it? I bet that thing is just a big POS. No offense to you.....it wasn't your fault.

your probably right, no gauge but when bench tested it did squirt a shitload of fuel halfway across my workshop, but who knows. at a loss here that pump, reg and all the fuel liens im up around $750. not sure whether any mech pump will work unless i find out that the .300 on cam is correct size, thus why im thinking go electric and be done with it, car is so close to road ready.

67coronet yeh i think i did about 4 full turns around .300" was what came up, did this with a dial gauge
