I wanted to add some slip differential into my 69 roadrunner. When I opened the nut to the filler hole ,a crap ton of oil came out. Any ideas why?

I replaced the oil about 10 yrs ago. Not many miles driven since. Maybe 1-2k. When I replaced the oil back then, I only added enough to the filler hole. Oil was cold and car was fairly level, not jacked.

Thanks in advance

Water is heavier than at least motor oil. Not sure about gear though. Thats the only thing I could think of for it rising. Water somehow came in through the vent. Might need to get out the suck o lux and pull what you can out through the fill hole. Or pop the axles out some and drop the center section out.

How much is "a crap ton" of oil?

It's not unusual to have some run out especially if you filled it cold and now it's warm out. Also the position of the axle has a effect on how full it is.

When I opened it, it poured onto a dish towel size rag I had handy. Soaked that rag. Put the plug back in. Got a small 1’ x 1’ pan and it just about covered the bottom. Then it stopped

Sounds like it was just over filled. So just remove enough below the fill plug to add 4oz of friction modifier. The best is Motor Craft found at your local Ferd dealer.
