Getting Keys Made

Macguyver could do that :icon_thumright:

He just took out a Chrysler key blank and grabbed the big end with the vice grips, shined it up with the steel wool, then put it into the door lock and gave it a couple of hard twists. When he pulled the key back out you could see where the tumblers had made contact with the blank, and he filed away all those areas. Poof! New key in about two minutes.

lol, if I see you lurking outside my house with a Dremel tool, Ron, I'm callin' da cops! :busted:

The selling of key blanks with the Chrysler Pentastar on the on eBay is a racket, seven to 10 bucks for a set with the emblem. I say BS!

Here is the deal, stopped by the local Chrysler dealer today, and asked if they had any key blanks for older Plymouth cars, guy disappears and comes back with a tray, full of key blanks, only the trunk/glove box one, said take as many as you need, so I grabbed 4, he says here, have two more, give em to your friends! I asked what I owed him, he says nothing, nobody asks for those anymore. Anyway, took them to my local locksmith shop to get them cut, asked about the ignition keys, which they had 4. So, ended up getting two new sets cut plus the additional two ignition blanks from them, for 15 bucks, or 3.50 a key and no charge for the extra blanks.

I have pretty good luck finding oddbal stuff at ACE- like the fune thread nuts for LBJ to backing plates...

Problem is, I have to drive past two Lowes, one 2 min from my house, to get to an ACE.

I also still have two old school independantly owned HW shops near me, but the one closest is always out of what I need, and the other is "going out of business" for the last 18 months, but usually has what I need after $6 in gas!

That's funny. I have a Lowes that's two minutes from my house that I have to drive past to get to Ace, and in heavy traffic to boot.

Ace IS the place .they've even helped me w/all kinds of liitle stuff for my 67 coronet everything I needed from them they had it....gotta love em..God Bless.Bear R.-

Big-box stores blow for keys. They think that if you can run a register, you can run a key machine. WRONG! ACE is good. But when I need a good locksmith, or keymaker (without return trips), I find a locksmith who's name ends in "stien", "farb", "witz", or "bloom". Yes, thats right! I want a good Hebrew locksmith! When they cut me a key, I never came back 'cause it didn't fit. I'd bring them a lock I lost the key for, they would open it. A trade handed down for generations.

Sorry, Red, but I got one up on you...... I own my own True Value store !!!!!! And for the record, when customers come in with their own blanks, I never charge them. That's where we have to beat the big box stores, service. That and my 35 years of experience and knowledge in the biz. Can't tell you how many people I've walked through doing their own repairs and how many lamps I fix for little old ladies. And when I only charge them $1.49 for a plug, they always try to tip me. I never take it and I just tell them thanks, tell all your friends about us !!!!!!

I have you all beat...I have a key machine in my basement!!

Yea making key cuts is so easy you don't even need a machine to do it. Even though I own several styles of key machines. I even have a stamp cutter. If you have ever noticed on the right door lock assy you will usually find a 4 digit code. With that code you can look in a book and it will give you the cut depths and make a key without ever having the original. The old pliers and file trick works great and easy also. I have had to use that trick several times in my old profession. (the ever so hated repo man) as I used to say it's not only a job but an adventure and you don't have to join the service to get it. I have NEVER used a locksmith to anything key related ever!!! I have a local lock shop I use to get blanks and it is usually around $7 to $10. for a box of 50 key blanks. It is about time to go get more Pentastar keys so i will be making a trip to get em soon.

ahhhh yes....but MacGuyver could make the keys with parts from an old cake mixer and the coolant return line from a 40 year old refrigerator, whilst being handcuffed to the side of a railway wagon. :headbang:

If these match the originals in appearance I'd been interested in a few sets if you are so inclined to give us a hook up ;)

Same here, its my hardware store for nuts, bolts, washers, and all the little fiddly hardware. I go there so much, they don't even ask if I need help because they all know I am going to the hardware isle! Another good thing about ACE at least the one here, they now have a box where you can retire any American Flag, when it fills up they take it to the VFW for proper and respectful disposal!

Would be more than glad to. As soon as I get over to get them I will let you know. When i do get them I will post pics so everyone can see what they look like. Just been real busy at work and other projects.
