So the block i have is a 1977 block built on 6 27, it has a maltese cross on it, so it has .001 undersized bearings. The heads are 4006452 heads. Dont know if this means anything but the rockers had 176+ on them. And holy crap those are huge rockers.

So what are yalls thoughts on this block and head combo? Im just going to get it going for now, but would it ever be worth it to soup up eventually? Or would i be better starting with a new block and or heads? I want to eventually build a 572 stroker.

452 heads are similar/same as 906s
You have the "short" block and Heads, use what you have.
Have crank checked.

The cross doesn't signify specifically what size the bearings are, just that the engine DOES have factory non standard size bearings in it. I've torn them down and found sizes ranging from standard to .010" straight from the factory.

So just curious, whats the reason for it? Dont figure they would change something for no reason.

The reason for the different sizes? My guess has always been to keep wast down. Say a standard crank got knocked around, or the crank grinder slipped a little....cheaper to fix it than trash it.

Same as factory body filler. Them boys weren't nowhere near perfect goin down the assembly line. lol

I think you better start with an aftermarket block if you are planning on 572 cubic inches. 572 will require 4.5 bore and a 4.50 stroke. You can put a 4.50 stroke crank in a stock block but you can't bore it to 4.500".

Party pooper. lol

452 heads are not the same as 906's. The intake port on a 452 has a flat floor like the old 516's, which is not as good of a transition into the pocket as the radiused floor 915 and 906 head.

In my opinion the only reason for the 452's popularity was because the 915 and 906 heads were pretty much gone but people still want to build hot BB MoPars. So a substitute replacement had to be found. This was before the nice selection of aftermarket aluminum heads we have now. You can still get good results from the 452 heads so don't throw them out if they are good.

Yea i think ill dial that number down a bit till i can use my stock or a stock block, aftermarket blocks get pricey.

A side question too, what spark plugs go in the 452's? I need to replace them and i have cheap autolites meant for a chevy in them.

One advantage to 452 heads is that they were built for unleaded gas, and so already have hardened valve seats.

Absolutely right! Assuming the seats were not ground to oblivion.

Ive also heard that with porting they flow as good as the 906's. I was dreading finding a worst one. The rockers on the side that i took off the cover were all clean and looking great, nothing loose, and ive seen old rockers. So the heads are good.
