hard starting and bogging problem on my 73 roadrunner 318+2

Well I ordered a reman Carb to see what happens this is basically the last ditch effort I hope it helps I can't think of anything else.

keep us posted, I am about to embark on the same adventure...
picked up a 72 satellite with 318 1b carb, and I want to get it running/driving cheaply
I def want to put a 4 V edelbrock intake and new carb on it.
free flowing exhaust etc.. and get it rolling and braking correctly.

Well here it is got it off eBay and I'm pleasantly surprised its actually a carter precision reman with warranty and all gonna go bolt it up. After that I'm gonna try something else I just thought of I am going to find actual tdc with a piston stop tool and make sure my balancer timing mark is correct maybe when I checked that and found it was so far off my timing mark was wrong. 1371919455570.jpg

OK well Carb is on needs tuning before I drive as it starts sputtering when I put it in gear but it fired up fast and ran good the fast idle before choke comes off is even working good. I just finished building my tdc tool as Napa, car quest, or anvance auto could not get one in a timely manner or some at all. It wasn't too bad I'm gonna post a thread in tool section for anyone who wants to build one. 1371929292555.jpg

OK after checking my tdc I discovered my mark was not accurate but wasn't off by much about 5° btdc so my balanced obviously can never be trusted again as I'm sure it will move again. So I set timing to right around actual TDC and it runs good I even adjusted Carb with vacuum guage. So when you put in gear and come to a stop it seems to have a bit of a lumpy idle but doesn't stall when taking off from a stop or going around corners anymore. The only thing I notice is a bit of surging when cruising around 30 to 40 but not horrible. I'm wondering if I should retard the timing even more as it seemed to run better that way when I was setting timing. This whole thing makes me wonder if the engine has had a came change at some point in its life. Here is a question is there a way to set optimal timing with my vacuum gauge ?
