Hawk's Cross Country 70 Road Runner Trip

Hey Hawk let me know if you want to meet up at Pappy's for some good B-B-Q tomorrow at 11 or somewhere else around the city ... understand if it doesn't fit into plans :)

Or you can come by the house later in the day if you want for some refreshments.

Love this thread

Forgive me if you've already answered this but rpm's are running on the freeway?
When we are running about 75 MPH we are tuning about 2200 RPM.

Hope there's no more rain!
There was no rain - we had a stellar night at the park! It was cool, crisp and perfect weather!

Hawk, be sure to pose your bird with the other bird. The Piasaw bird painted on the cliffs. Worth a turn around, can't be but a few miles back, if I recall correctly.
Sorry, it might have been cool to do, but I just saw this now and we are well past it now...

Thank you for the offer. It looks like the stars didn't align for our trip. We are now West of the city and I think you are across the river East. I would have loved to stop by and see your car and said Hi. Please say Happy Birthday to your girls from the crazy car dudes!

Day07:
We continued driving on Route 66 and did some scenic driving. But before we got going we had to do some laundry, but I figured I would save you guys from any pictures of our dirty underwear! We really enjoyed the driving except for a couple of spots on the old Route 66 which were really beat up. We stopped at some sights along the way which were fun.

A couple of sights along Route 66. This was in Atlanta, Illinois

After a rainy evening the night before and a rainy morning, the poor bird was looking pretty rough, so we stopped and washed it.

Here is where we crossed the Illinois river on a ferry. That was fun!

Camping out of the trunk of the car at Pere Marquette park. The weather was great and we really enjoyed the park.

Day 8:

Today we did some hiking in Pere Marquette state park, and then we headed to St. Louis. Based on a tip from Tallhair, we parked at a parking lot in LaCledes Landing. We had a great lunch outside, and then we walked to the arch. From there, we drove down to the Anheuser-Busch Brewey tour. The tour was OK, except we were not able to get into the plant where the brewing takes place since there was "maintenance work" going on. We finished the day in a less than stellar motel for the night - but at least the WiFi works...

From the trail at Pere Marquette.

There was a cool area with a bunch of tents reenacted from the Lewis and Clark era. Nice to walk through...

A few of the arch. Sorry about the one that is rotated wrong...

Here are a couple from the Budweiser Plant. This is the first time I have turned down free beer, as I had to drive on the highway in rush hour traffic :nono:

Hey Hawk, If you're gonna be there tomorrow, stop by the raceway in Granite City for Hot Rod Magazine's drag week. We'll be heading down there about 5am tomorrow in a limelight 70RR lol....

Hawk Man! Hope you're enjoying your dream trip. Great pics and looks like you're living large - so to speak. That's my style too. A few campgrounds with motels mixed in between. Life as it should be - on the road. Car is looking good and sounds like it's running well also. Good to here.

Enjoy brother her and live the life....!

Diggin this in a big way Hawk. Giving me tips for when it becomes my turn!
I wish more members would post of their adventures.

Sorry, great idea, but we are just a bit past that point...

Hope you don't mind Hawk .. I fixed the Arch photo

Safe travels buddy

Awesome! Thanks for fixing it - feel free to fix any others too, although I will try to verify. All these look good on my PC viewer though...

So tonight we are in Knob Noster campground, so no pictures tonight - another phone post night.

Tomorrow we head through Kansas City and then make our way to Dodge City. The next day we will head to Pueblo, CO.

Now to tend the fire and drink a cold libation!

We're all loving your journey. It's a great story. As I said before, don't wash the car. Every single bug splat, every single stone chip, is a sentence in the story of this journey. When you finally get to the west coast, take a pic of the car, let's see the battle scars. Then give it a good & proper wash.

Drove out West from Allentown in July of 91 in the 69 Plymouth - with my Dad - I remember driving through Kansas City with the "Kansas City here I come song in my head. It was so hot and humid we hit the gas and drove to Denver. Never stopped. The pig **** air in between was brutal. When getting to Colorado, the sky got blue and the air got clean. God Bless the Western United States. No car trouble til Laramie, Wyoming. Put a wheel bearing in at a Conoco Station. When/where do you pick up the girls?

So we washed it once already. I like your idea, but I also feel like I need to "represent" Mopar. SO MANY people come and look at the car, comment, etc. If we wouldn't have washed it after the rain it would have looked really bad. Non-car guys wouldn't get it...

We have had some hot weather, but the A/C has been really nice to deal with that. We barely used it the last couple of days because the temps have been cool. Awesome driving today - one of my favorite days on small roads...

We pick up the girls Friday night in Denver. Then we will have a marathon few days with a lot packed in - should be fun though!

Oh, and one last thing. We got the clutch "toe - up" issue solved today. I bought a set of carb springs - the ones where one sits over top of the other. We put the larger spring over the standard clutch rod spring and it worked perfectly. Not too hard to push, but enough to pull the pedal back up. I think my clutch pedal linkage still needs to be greased though, but that can wait for another day...

You already have the drive to Golden planned for sure. Up the canyon a short distance north of Denver if I recall. Saloons, swinging doors, sawdust on the floor.

Thanks for all the updates Hawk, I always like dropping in just to see where your at and check out the pics. 2,200 rpm on the freeway is about perfect and I agree you should be doing a bit better on mpg than what your getting but the important thing is it's running well. Keep the pics coming and enjoy

I look at it this way. You've driven this old car from the Atlantic ocean to , so far St Louis, and heading to the Pacific. You're doing a hell of a job, representing Ma Mopar. The bug splats, rubber bits, stone chips are only adding to the story and showing that a 45yr old mopar can take anything that is thrown at it.

. I'll second that. Merit Badges. Can't wait for more pictures. That Route 66/Artisan/brick building shot one of the best...so far.

Agreed, wish more Mopar owners would actually drive them! Every summer it's a goal of mine to see how many miles I can put on mine..... I'll likely exceed 3,000 this summer after a slow start with all of the rain but a trip to Canada helped haha. Rack em up

Wow! I just read this thread. I too will be following along. I salute you! It's really cool that you are taking this long trip in a Road Runner! I would love to take a drive like this - not sure I would ever have the guts! Safe travels, I will be watching and dreaming.

Glad to hear the extra spring worked! Now you can sleep easier. Keep that thang cleen! You're right, You're representing all of us with Mopars. Have Fun! Paul
