Same motor same heads all same. What would using .020 head gaskets vs .039 gaskets gain in compression numbers? (383 +.030) Just a ball park to see it's worth it while apart.
Thanks POPS

Not enough to feel it in the seat of your pants.

what's your quench height? (how far is the piston down the hole) which heads?
if the thinner gasket would get you down under .050 it would help more than the compression
if open chamber it's not going to help quench

That engine came with .020 gaskets from the factory so except for the over bore helping to increase compression just a tad, all you will be doing is keeping it stock CR.

what year 383
stock pistons or rebuilder pistons
2 bbl or 4 bbl any idea head casting number
cheers

why are you doing a valve job or something
If he used cast pistons he would have lost some compression
but if they milled the heads a little on the rebuild he may be back up near stock but with a composition gasket he for sure has lost some compression
now if this was a 2 bbl he's ok for regular gas, except for his seats unless they installed hard seats
if a 4 bbl he might be better off with less than road runner compression
what I'm saying is that we do not have enough info to say anything really meaningful except generalities
definitely not worth doing if you are not doing a tear down anyway

Thanks Cranky and all. Just wanted a general idea on a thinner head gasket. Question answered !! POPS
