I have my 318 poly torn down to just the block, pistons and crank. The engine has never been touched in it's 47 years of existance, and there is heavy internal sludge everywhere. I've gotten a lot of it out with a putty knife and tablespoon, but there's still a lot. I know that I should get it hot tanked, but I don't have the means to haul the block anywhere, and there's no shops closeby with a tank (It's rural here).

So what chemical cleaners will help me melt the sludge while I scrub? Folks have suggested using kerosene, gasoline (I'm a little leary of using those-especially gas), rislone, sea foam, xelxon (sp?), and others. What have folks here used? Thanks!

or get yourself a power washer and some jugs of degreaser from Northern Tool or some such

Yeah, I have seen that many times, I always thought maybe it was lead from old fuel, looks just like Never-Seize. Pressure washer sounds good.

I've had to use a sharp pointed screwdriver and a hammer to chisel some of it loose. I doubt a pressure washer would work that well. Nobody near by has one anyway.

The best thing to use is oven cleaner....Spray on type....Easy off is the best...Then hit it with the pressure washer...It,ll come clean I guarantee it!!!!Used it on my 727 that I just rebuilt and have been doing it to trannys, transfer case and engines for years!!!Soak it well and let it sit for 30 to 40 minutes...You,ll be amazed at how well it works!!No pressure washer?Take it to the car wash or you can rent one just for a day!
