Ok y'all, looking for some suggestions here. First off, I hope I don't affend anyone here with my gripe and what its about, especially with those of you that have these. I had new neighbors move in recently and with them they brought their 1 pit bull and 4 chiwawas. These damn things won't shut up! They even have their friends bring THEIR pit bull over and they all bark up a storm. Its frustrating because whenever I walk out my back door they hear my door open and come ripping out of their house barking to raise the dead. Unfortunatly the owners don't mind it and at times they will be out there for well over an hour barking and yipping. My wife called the city after they barked for almost 2 hours one day. We now hate to go out into our own back yard. Now keep in mind, this is no postage size lot either. I have an acre in town and their house is probably 150-170 feet from my back door. By the way, the city did nothing and neither did the animal control, another worthless agency. Their suggestion was to talk to the owners (duhhh tried that already) and if that doesn't work, take them to mediation or even court.
So in some of my devilish :devil1: own self I decided to give the doggies some treats, maybe they would like me better then. So I got some lunch meat, summer sausage pieces and peperonii and filled them with cyanne pepper and super hot sauce, then threw them over the fence. Well they apparently devoured them and from the sounds of it havehad an uncomfortable night followed with some very uncomfortable bowel movments. Unfortunatly this didn't shut them up. Heck, I even tried one of those anti bark devices set up by the fence, no go.
SOOOOOO here I am, looking for some good suggestions from you guys because I know you have some. And yes I have thought about using my very quiet 17hmr out my son's second story bedroom window........

Ok, paitently waiting for your responses.

Most counties have noise ordinances after a certain time of night. It's 10 PM here.

I hear that rat poison laced meatballs thrown over into their yard works wonders

That's just wrong and you know it, anti freeze soaked bread is the way to go.

And that's wrong too.

Yes we have an ordanance here too and its also 10pm but it's frequently broken by them, still no action by city, county or animal control.

How about setting up a radio on your side of the fence and just let it play.

I thought about this a few times also, but using my huge outdoor stage type speakers and the 400 watt amp. that would drown out the noise for sure!!!

You have to bug the city and the dog pound more than those dogs bug you it's the only way to get action, get other neighbors to call in as well to support your claim it will work just call and email daily or hourly if that's what it takes. squeaky wheel also record the sounds and email them to the city see how they like it.

Have you complained? Have you had anyone come out anf filed a report? I would make them come out every night until they got tired of it and did something. It's what YOU pay them for.

I have two dogs and they tend to bark at people walking by, not all the time but sometimes. Neighbors who know them, just call them by name and tell them to be quiet or just say "hi" to them and they quiet right down. So, maybe if you learned the names of your neighbors dogs, you could do the same thing. Might work, might not. As a side note, I'm kind of surprised the chihauhaus haven't become snacks for the pit bull.

Dick,
Sonny's grandmother made special "meatballs" for the dog next door (35 yrs ago)...it just was ill for a short time....although it was disgusting and I was mad she took the law into her own hands, I Just had to laugh!!
she was an old Italian from the "old country" and thought nothing of it!! I miss her much.

1st: Speak with your other neighbors and see if they have the same grievances concerning the dogs. :argue:
You might find one of them has also spoke with them and now that everybody is aware, ALL are willing to call in complaints. :mob:
If complaints about a specific animal nuisance come from multiple neighbors, then you don't look like an individual 'with a bone to pick' (couldn't help slipping that metaphor in). More neighbors involved means more attention. Animal control or police/ sheriff may be more responsive to multiple complaints.

2nd: If the above does not get results, I would resort to some 'twangy' C&W on a radio facing their house to drown out the barking (and yiping) while you are outside. Weather is getting better. You should not be banished from your own back yard. :tiptoe: If anything I would force myself out there more often. :fight: Early mornings on weekends and late (evenings) on week nights. The dogs will either get used to you or they will eventually be taken away. Wear them down...don't let them wear you down.

I concur with this. My dogs used to bark at my next door neighbor when I first got them. Now they don't give my neighbors a second look, now that they are used to them.

I had the same issue a few years ago and I sit on my back porch all the time so it was driving me crazy. Fireworks solved it for me.
I put a box of firecrackers outside the back door and was ready light one everytime I walked outside, as soon as they started barking I would throw one right down at the base of the fence, everytime they started barking. After a couple of weeks they simply went to the other side of the yard and stayed very quiet when I came outside.
The one that had the most effect on them was one of those strobe things that flash a very bright white light for about 1 minute, and has no noise, thew it down on their side of the fence and when they ran at it, it started flashing right in their face, thats when they started to behave better.
I just kept the box of firecrakers at the back door after that and had to give them a reminder about once a month.

A propane Cannon. the kind the farmers use , to scare birds from the crops.

aknotts,

Thanks. You jogged my memory!

I have a buddy who has several 'Min Pins' (miniture pincers). Everytime someone comes to his house they spool up. He has a tin can with 50-60 pennies in it and the old lid duct taped on. Those dogs HATE the sound of it being shaken. They scatter like roaches when a light is turned on whenever he grabs it. Worth a try. :edgy:

I also had the same problems with new neighbors and tried just about everything mentioned here. I tried to be nice about it and they were ******** so after making lots of noise etc, I started calling and calling and calling animal control until they started coming out. They also have 4 dogs in a large yard that share it with 3 kids. They remodeled their house right after moving in but I just can't imagine how nice it is with 7 'kids' running through it with all the dog **** all over the yard. Btw, city ordinance says no more than 2 dogs or you have to have a kennel license which is kinda hard to get in a residential neighborhood. I asked the city why have the law on the books if it's not going to be enforce. Anyways, they don't bark much anymore since I stayed on animal control for months. I was just about to hire a lawyer and go after the city and the neighbors when AC finally started writing them tickets and warned them about having so many animals. Btw, if you want to mess with them, throw a bunch of beef bullion cubes over there on a rainy day so the rain will melt the cubes into the ground. It won't be long before their yard will look like the surface of the moon :D

use to freeze paint balls and shoot' em never had another problem

Talking with your neighbor or complaining to the authorities will do absolutely nothing but create an enemy out of the folks next door. You know what has to be done. Do it and keep quiet about it. Sympathize with the dog owner afterward.
