HELP!!! Overheating issue

Hi guys, hopefully somebody can help me. Friend of mine rebult a 440 out of a 69 charger pretty much stock. Sat on his shop floor since 1982 with less than a thousand miles on it. Sold to me and installed in my 73 RR, Car for now has 4:10 rear, put new aluminum radiator on it. She sits and idles fine with gauge just above cold, drive down the road 40-45 mph.within 5 min. she starts climbing, get her home and puking antifreeze out. changed thermostat, put aluminum shroud on with 2-12"fans. Still runs real hot. Took her out today removed thermostat, same thing. Timing seems to be just about perfect. Does anybody have a suggestion what to look at next? Somebody suggested cooking the engine or boiling it. Driving me crazy...... Thanks

Water pump condition? Impeller could be worn.
radiator hose collapsing due to suction from pump?

WHAT WATER PUMP? what is your timing set at ? does it ping or make noises when accel pedal is mashed to floor ? do you have electric fan or what do you have ?>

What temperature is reached? Use a laser temp gun to be sure. Puking could be normal if air or overfilled.

Do you leave the radiator cap off and watch for the thermostat to open when filling? You will see the coolant start to flow when it does. Placing the cap on before this takes place will cause an air pocket in the cooling system and you'll get the puking your describing. Don't run it without a thermostat...

It sounds like you have air trapped in there. Jack up the front end, remove the rad cap and get the car up to temp and see if there's air that comes out I doubt it's head gaskets but you never know. No oil or coolant mixing?

Just take radiator cap off start the car if bad head gasket coolant usually will come shooting out and check your oil for signs of coolant like being over filled. The reason I think that is because u removed thermostat and still overheating and it sounds like it happens quickly. If you had coolant shooting out of cap air bubble would have also came out, if fluid can get out air would have too. Just what I'm thinking I had a car that would idle and temp was ok but u u reved it would quickly over heat it was head gasket. Good luck

I have the heads off of the motor and 2 rear water jacket ports on both sides of engine and on heads were plugged completely shut with a hard black residue. Pushed drill bit thru them and blockage was just on the ends of the holes. Hoping this is my problem, waiting for new gasket kit to come in the morning. Hey before you chuck good money away on new coolant check out Evans waterless coolant, never pressurizes and has no water in to rust out the block. just saying you have a chance to replace the old stuff with new stuff that will last the life of the motor.

Sorry for not getting back sooner guys.... while engine was out I painted the block, installed .510 Hubert cam, adjustable timing chain and gears and headers. got everything put back together went to install motor and it won't fit with these trick flow headers from summit. I did not realize but I guess in 73 roadrunner's were built for either a big block or small block. the difference being the inner fender panels in the engine compartment. I have a parts car that had a big block in it. I have been cutting, welding, bondoing and painting to make it look as original as possible. Question- what sort of inspection cover went over that hole in the inner fender panel? is it rubber, metal. Thanks for your patience....appreciate your input. thanks

Metal on my 68.

Check your cap. Some caps dont go deep enough to seal causing it to leak on the aluminum rads

If so on both counts, and as 69Redrunner mentions, I suspect a lower radiator hose is collapsing due to the suction of the water pump. The fix? Your lower hose should have a spring in it to keep it from doing such. Try it and let us know what comes of it. Good luck!

You are correct, pretty much doesn't over heat badly till going down the road. I will check the lower rad hose and make sure it has a spring in it. I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Hopefully going to install engine this weekend and give it the breakin for the new cam. I should be able to tell if she is going to overheat with ten minutes of running time at 2000 rpm's

They are metal, I saw a couple of sets on ebay yesterday while searching under 73 Plymouth, pretty cheap if you need a set.
