High Volume Oil Pump?

At what point do you change to a high volume oil pump? Do you change to a higher capacity pan at the same time?
no it moves the oil faster through the motor i had a high volume/high pressure on my 73 400 i had 95# of oil pressure i had the is a stock 4 quart pan
 
I like good oil pressure at idle when the oil is hot, so I use the high volume pump.
The larger pump might cost me a few extra HP to turn, but that is not an issue I am concerned with most of the time.
If it is a drag race engine where your looking for the most power, and usually the oil is only warm, and the engine clearances are not too large, then use the standard volume pump.
 
My 2 cents is I would not put in a high volume pump-I put one in my W block 409 and every pin hole leaked oil-you can easily pump your oil pan out of oil so plan on a deeper pan-more oil-and whats the gain: more volume of oil-if I was racing maybe maybe.

FWIW, I use the 6-Quart Hemi reproduction oil pan on my drivers, and the Milodon 7-Quart on the Charger that gets drag raced. Never had any oiling problems.
If a High volume pump empties the oil pan to where it looses pressure, the problem is not the pump. Either the pumps pressure is too high, the engine clearances too big, oil not returning to he pan, oil in the pan not baffled and pickup becomes uncovered or windage and oil foaming.
at the same pressure, either pump should be moving the same amount of oil volume through the engine. A HV pump will be bypassing more oil than a standard pump, so it will heat the oil more than the standard pump.
I don't know if there is a difference with this between using the vane style GM pumps and the Mopar gerotor oil pumps
 
Thats all on you for the motor to do its thing oil is just bearing.

Not in every situation. Using a hv pump on my 440 using the stock 402 pan for 1000 miles and never had a starvation/pressure drop no matter how I use it.
