$$ How do you fund your project, when you don't have expendable cash???

I agree with the great suggestions above...

I hope this doesn't sound brutal, but if your goal is to continue the hobby (not specifically the project your working on now) you could sell your current car (assuming it has some value in current state) and purchase something else to work on at a lesser cost, like and A body?.... or heaven forbid a Chevy! (am I going to be burned at the stake?) and then put the balance in a bank account to suppliment your project budget.

If you buy a chevy, I do not take responsability for the envious hatred that you will experience for being able to find cheap parts easily. :)

In all seriousness. Best of luck to you, continuing to do the things we love is important to quality of life.

Nope, I'll drive the Charger till the wheels fall off before I give her up, been wanting one for 23 years to replace the one I sold back then, don't intend on restoring it, now, saving up money to buy materials for rust repair, after that, a el-cheapo paint job, then maybe a big block transfer, over the years while I drive it, no rush....oh, and swap out these Keystones for some 70's style old grungy aluminum slots

The one I use to have and sold back in 91

Get a second job so you have disposable income. I do extra things on the side, like collections for lawyers and doctors in the area.

More power to you Old Skool... Not parting from the car you want is just as important... A lot of great advice from great people here, I'm sure you'll find a way. We're all behind you.

I don't know if you can find much out there that is cheaper than the third Gen Chargers. I am in West Palm Beach Fl and am trying to reach the owner of the 72 Charger in your Tampa Craigs list. If you aren't familiar with what they go for, look them up in your Craigs list. IMO a lot of car for the money when you get the right one.

Good point... I guess I was thinking how much my project is costing me, especially in parts compared to past GM projects...but I'm cheap.

All that aside, old Skool has the car he wants.

Best of luck to you on the craigslist buy...there have been a few good ones on cl recently. I look at them longingly myself.

Wow this is the big question of the day. I still have a decent job for now. But i support 4 kids living at home in their 20's. I do side jobs welding, lead work panel beating and small body works and electrical wire harness work. Nothing is easy anymore like years ago. Anything you can do at home like silver soldering pot metal pieces or wiring small detail jobs at your kitcvhen table. Remember no matter what anyone says this still is the greatest Country in the world! Do small dtails stuff with a magnifier. Hand painting emblems, logos or small panels.

that's identical to what we do now, and Bud, I do all my own work, and don't farm anything out, also, I'm not talking restoration work, daily driver type of stuff. I like my Charger and have no intentions of getting a 4dr 6cyl grocery wagon etc, no offense to those who have to or like them, I'm just talking about being able to afford materials, repair items, I drive my Mopars and cars of the past like they did from the factory, on any road in any weather condition, so , not trying to do a Foose restoration on a shoestring, but normal repairs, body work, hell, my car will get a Macco paint job for $299 when the time comes.
I have to tell you a great number of macco shops do very good work these days and dont underestimate what they do.

Being disabled and on a fixed income, wife disabled as well, we barely have any money left over after necessities and bills, but get by, and even help our kids and grandkids when we can, so sometimes, just having extra money for gas to go to a car show or out the dinner, becomes far and few in between, I usually have to find something to sell, replace this for that to have any cash for my cars normal repairs, let alone toys. I do a lot of craigs bartering and selling at the moment, some ebaying of old parts etc.

So, what advice do you have for those who want to remain in the hobby with little or no extra cash? If you're in the same situation, what have you done to generate wasteful cash, or even if you're not in this situation, I'm sure there are plenty of people with many ideas for generating some extra income...and I'm not talking about big $$$ stuff either, a few hundred extra $$ a month type of stuff. I'm not afraid of hard work, but physically need to work smarter, as not healthy enough for serious labor.
It sucks getting older and even more when your body starts to fail, hoping with all the experience out there, some simple suggestions out there might help some of us.

so, what ways do you use to make extra $$

oh, and don't mistake this for some kind of charity thread, my wife and and I at times have given all we have to those who have none and will never take from anyone.

I went and got my contractors license back in 04' since then I use my business to mostly pay for my project. I work full time for a large contractor but do do work on weekends when I need to. Mostly importantly I have reoccurring revenue. Meaning my business is an alarm company, I do monitoring so when you sign up you pay me a monthly fee, I charge less than most so I can get more business and accounts, build enough accounts and at the end of the month you have the extra cash you need to pay for whatever.

You seem pretty intelligent so if you can figure out what type of home business you can do that will get you the reoccurring revenue you'll be set. We also sold the heck out of all the stuff we didn't use or need anymore, that was only good for a few $ here and there.

Before that I used to restrict my family to the amount of utility's they could use, My wife became one of those extreme coupon's guru's and was able to save us $100's a month in food bills, we shut off our spa and any power robbing items that were not necessary to live with, we cut out most all of the TV services, I called all of the utility's and was able to get my bill dropped a few % points for the month. We were able to cut our expenses by 50% and then use my base income and any extra to stick into savings and build up 6-8 months worth of bills, we rode out the bad times like this for 2 years, then when work got super busy again out here was able to use my business to fund the project again.

Good luck if you need help figuring out how to set up a business let me know.

I gave myself a time-out after my Chevy outburtst, appologized to my Roadrunner and destroyed a Ertle die cast model of a 69 Chevelle with a ball peen hammer.... I'm good now

For me this Hobby is an ever evolving thing. I am still working on fine tuning and building my 66 Ply Satellite project. After 9 years since I acquired it, I am still not done yet. Why just last Thursday, I finally got it registered here so I can at least get it around town to get the things done that I cannot. Alignment, Head Liner install, new door hinges swapped with the old. new windshield, etc., and a lot of other little stuff. Being as I am on a fixed income now and virtually no credit any more as I got rid of that burden, I have now adjusted and learned to wait until I have saved up enough for the things I need done. Really simple that if you don't have the money then do not spend it. Credit cards are like borrowing and it must be paid back. I do not want to owe any body at this juncture in my life. I have added to that savings by selling quite a bit of parts online...mostly here on FBBO. But I actually am taking a hit as my pricing is low in order to move the extra parts and such I want gone. Also if you have a cash back recycling program on Aluminum cans, Glass, CRV which we have here in CA, etc. which I do here, gives me some extra as well. Every little bit helps in the long run. After 20 years in the Hobby I have learned that it is an ongoing thing and therefore needs to be managed accordingly by not trying to do too much at one time. That being said, the best move I made prior to my retiring was to amass a large amount of parts for the project before I really began the re-assembly which helped. Best advise I can give is be patient, save, save, save, and keep the eye on the prize.

Everyone said it all , I myself am not aloud to spend any money in my cars what ever I make buying and selling cars and parts is project money , I went after a 72 rallye charger once guy wanted 3400 for it was supposed to be a 4 speed car well 3 hours later of driveing it was an auto and I offered to buy just the hood doors and tail lights off the car offered him 400 for those parts he said id rather get rid of the far as a hole I said fine ill give you 500 and ill take the hole thing he said yes and started bringing parts out of every corner of his property for the car long storie short by the time I got done whoreing it out as I call it I made 6700 profit after e 500 investement and paying my guy to move the car there was so many parts he didn't tell me about there was 7 rallye charger clusters all in kint shape all with 150 mph speedos the hood doors trim tail lights full interior in nice shape 3 dashs a 400 mag motor, stuff like that is how I fund my projects but you can't go out and spend it all you need to reinvest some so you can continue to make extra money ,I needed glass for my charger so instead if buying a new glass shiped for 1000 I bought a 1000 dollar parts car took my glass and whored it out made my cash back plus an extra 800 and a new set ofrims and tires (donated those to my brothers duster ) so that's how its done in a nut shell but its not easy and the big scores are hard to find I also buy and fix up newer cars abd sell them to people those make you some dash but not a lot I bought a c4 vette once payed 1500 sold the rear for 700 bought a smaller rear for 300 and had a guy offer to buy the far before the rear went back in for 2700 ,the best ones are the cars you buy and people come up and knock on the door before its motor gets cold and offer you more then you payed had a Honda payed 1000 drove it home and ten min later had a guy the house asking if its for sale offered me 1700 sold
Well good luck and never get anything you cant fix

It seems most of you here pretty much do what I do also, buy, sell and swap parts. I've bought a few parts cars and parted them out and kept what I want. I also have some pretty good friends. We help each other out a lot and that is always a big help.

I bought and sold 5 muscle cars last year to fund my obsession ..actual 6 had to put the last one in my wife's name because NY only lets you sell 5.. I pick them off the internet, some needing small repair some nothing but a good cleaning maybe tires and a tune up... I'm retired and our income is good enough, but extra cash has to come in to fund my personal car or I'd feel guilty...occasionally I do some parts also ....bought a dual snorkel 383 air cleaner just this morning and will clean it up and sell it this spring

I still am working 9-5 as any but when I was .... like.... younger, for the 300 I used to run it into the ground. Two three months afterward after obtaining the part I would drive it again etc. I do most of the work save for actual machining or painting.

Thing is I needed (still do) to order parts from overseas because our local Mopar dealer doesn't stock anything before/older than early eighties. And that means that if a part costs $100 there's $100 in taxes, import duties etc to pay on top of that. Nowadays it's even worse..........

I've just been driving mine a couple days a week. I'm short on extra cash at the moment. I'm glad I've been working on the mechanicals before the body work. This way I can drive it as I work on it. If you can do the mechanicals first. I would go that route. Then Invest in the body work. I do have to change the oil in mine. My son and house have to come before my car. So If you can only do one thing at a time on it then that is what you have to do.

you can always become a local uber driver?
