I built an off-grid 4X4 van

update...... this thing is headed to Baja Mexico for a couple of months, so it's been back for a couple finish items.......

I never actually had the awnings and tent rooms up, so needed to see what that's about.

also installed a 17 gallon fuel cell where the spare tire used to live. I got a modern filler neck out of a junkyard wreck and modified it to work; and put a locking cap on it, you can see in the pic. I hooked it to a 12 volt pump and ran a line to the filler neck area. I had to run a vent tube up through the rear corner and out the roof......... fuel is easily transferred into the van fuel tank or into the portable generator. We estimate the van has approximately 500 mile range

the rubber flaps keep water from running between the van and the tents, 3 inch pvc tubes hold fishing rods, but also serve as a mounting surface for the rubber

the exhaust fan is set to open at 78* and close if it rains....... the refrigerator will actually freeze things if set low enough .......both have been working flawlessly and uninterrupted for months

when armed, the security lights come on and blind anything within 40 feet

I see me rocking this beast at Carlisle next year :bananadance:

I will black out the rest of the exterior next time I have it, just ran out of time

and nothing says mobile meth lab like a dryer vent hanging out the side
one dryer vent is exhaust for the air conditioner, the other vent is for running electric into said air conditioner; either from the generator or an outside source

WOW! You really thought of everything.

To: PETE, aka @chargervert
FROM: Shop Forman,
The bigger the "STICK" the "SOONER" your vehicle will be in the garage for work. No exceptions.

because I have to show somebody, you guys are it.........

right before covid, my older brother scored a 3/4 ton "quigley 4X4" high top Ford conversion van...... he asked if I wanted to build him an off grid type mini motor home

never backing down from a challenge, I said "Hold my beer" ...... and proceeded to gut what was there

and then it snowballed........... and over the next 20 months, I proceeded to stuff 20 pounds of goodies into a 2 pound box

it has, in no particular order.....

on demand hot water for a shower
a portable chemical toilet
sink and 2 burner stove combo
45 gallon water tank supply under the bed
AC powered air conditioner, and portable gas generator
portable awnings and tent room rear and side
roof exhaust fan
refrigerator
exterior lighting
reverse camera
big *** deep cycle DC batteries power all the accessories
AC power inverter
200 watt solar panel charges the batteries
i may have forgotten something

it kicked my ***...... but eventually, I came out on top

I have a bazillion pics, here are a few

I might have missed it somewhere, but what engine is in it? I was assuming it was a diesel to go with the off the grid idea since they run on nearly anything.

my van made it to the tip of Baja without a hitch, and everything is functioning as designed.......

my Brother sent me a couple pics today, I knew he was headed out, but I didn't know he had already left.......

I broke my nuts building that monstrosity, the one pic put a huge grin on my face

Lost track of this thread along the way.....cool stuff!!

I have a similar project in my future.
Dodge pathfinder 4x4 and a Dodge turtle top camper van. Will morph them together to have a 4x4 turtle top camper van. Pardon my jungle.

Nice work elldubb
The only thing I see missing is the easy rider rifle rack that holds not one, not two but three of your favorite rifles

I have always wanted a 4x4 van, but then again, I love vans!! Very well done and thanks for sharing!!
