I CHEATED! How I stripped my 69 Charger deck lid.

Not familiar with All Metal, just had a lot of old school guys say that using lead is the way to go. Definitely not using panel bond - it's good stuff but if I can choose, I'll do lead. I hope I can find some place closer but Detroit isn't a bad drive.
Can I ask what it cost for the e coating? How long did it take for them to turn it around?

It was $3200 for just the shell and that's all we had done. Turn around was 3 weeks

Did that include the doors, hood, etc.? Was that for just the chemical cleaning or does that also cover the e coat?

That was nothing except for the shell. No doors, fenders, hood, etc. That cost included stripping and e coat.

That may sound expensive but the labor cost for a shop to strip a car is probably too much and they are not going to do as good of a job. Thanks.

OH MY GOD! That's BEAUTIFUL!!! Don't get bent out of shape - that's beautiful and I don't usually like white cars but that looks GREAT! I generally don't like Hemi orange cars but love it on a 'Cuda! This is a '73, right? Did you do the work or have it done?

Thanks. It's a 73 and did the work with the help of my 3 neighbors in our garages. We all have our specialties that worked out great. We've actually restored 8 cars from bottom to top over the years. My one neighbor took 3rd place a few years back at the Detroit Autorama with his Ford F3 Pickup. Now we just enjoy them driving them around.

I regret I did not get in to this sooner and hope it's not too late. I've done a lot on my current project and plan to do even more on the next one. I love it! It's hard work but it's great! I don't know if you guys restore wiper motors and guages and stuff like that - I'll still be sending those things out to an expert. Competing is a blast and I like beating the Chevy guys who used to make fun of my Mopars...

i ended up not doing any of the other panels. I bought a new trunk lid so it’s already e coated and the doors I actually separated the skins from the shells and cleaned out all of the rust then I epoxy primed everything and reassembled. I’m doing a similar process with the fenders as well.

I've never separated any skins - AMD installations blasted everything as I may have mentioned. I will get this original deck lid (and the other one I just dropped off) E coated after I finish working on it.
How did you clean out the rust?

How did you clean out the rust?

I totally removed the inside lips of the doors and cleaned up the area in between the lip and shell, then with the skin being loose I cleaned up in between the outer side of the shell and door skin. I did this with a combination of fiber wheels and wire wheels. Then I coated the areas in-between with Eastwood rust converter. I made new inner lips for the insides of the doors, sprayed all of the areas with weld through primer and welded the lips back on. Once I'm done with final gapping of the doors I'm going to pour rust encapsulator down in the seams from the inside just to seal everything up
