I was fishing behind the rear bumper on my '69 Satellite, when I found this the other day. It looks like pneumatic tubing, but I have zero idea why it would be there. What the heck?

Yep, for air shocks. If you want to use the air shocks then you will need it, but I would ditch the air shocks.
 
air shocks are just plain NO GOOD....rough riding and not good for the car. if you like the *** in the air look....get heavy springs or a cheaper way....SHACKLES ! ( I LOVE EM)
 
You only need it if you have air shocks. What shocks are on your car now? Were these lines just laying somewhere or were they connected? To answer your questions we need more info. from you. If you have air shocks and like them, hook them up, if not my suggestion is go with good gas shocks and ditch the air shocks.
 
Air shocks ain't the devil. They can be useful as long as they are used correctly. That does not include pumping them all the way up to the top of the suspension travel. Air shocks really are not designed to raise a vehicle and make it look cool. They are designed to keep a vehicle level with a load on it.

Now, longer shackles ARE the devil. They give the rear suspension more lateral leverage than it is designed to have. I have actually seen long shackles tear completely out of frame rails because they had so much side leverage. They're dangerous. Increasing the distance between the spring eye and the frame pivot mount is not a good idea. It puts more side loads on everything connected there. Longer shackles are actually more incorrect to raise a vehicle than air shocks, IMO.

i couldnt agree more. shackles are very dangerous especially around corners. just ask these guys LOL

Koni Classics are also an option to use. Way better handling because of modern internals but still looking OEM. They´re adjustable too.
 
i had a 71 Monte Carlo with ait shocks on....NO THEY WERENT PUMPED UP ALL THE WAY.......... went right into the trunk..

usin shackles for years and never had a problem...you say potato...i say poh-tah-toe

...and that black car up there ALMOST LOOKS like a Monte Carlo.......Monte's didnt have leaf springs and that pic right there is a classic example of NOT KNOWING WHAT THE F***K youre doin!...and FRANKENSTEINING leaf springs on it!...case closed Edith !
 
Get some gas charged load levelers. I have them on my 70 Road Runner gives it some lift while not ruining the ride
 
I guess the biggest deal is that the shock mounts were never designed to be load carrying points-you risk bending or breaking the upper mount especially, as Monte Man illustrated. I have airshocks on Arty, came on it, there only because the leafs are shot. They are on the replacement list, as are the wheel hop prone Gabriels. Likely Koni adjustables going in, if I can afford them.
 
If you dont need them, I have a pair of shocks that need air lines..
Still figuring out what I want to do. I'll let you know if I don't need 'em anymore.

Were the airshocks, with the inflation tubing a factory item, or do you think they were added aftermarket?
