I have a 65 Satellite with a blueprinted stock 426 wedge in it. It has a Six Pack on it with a Chrysler "purple shaft" cam. The cooling system on this car is just marginal and always has been. If I can keep the car moving it will run about 185 degrees with an ambient temp in the 90's. Get stuck in traffic or even in the staging area of the drags and I get nervous. It has the big factory fan with a new fan clutch. The car never had a shroud. This issue is manageable but I'm tired of worrying about it and it's not a dependable summer time cruiser like this.

Some cooling system information. It has the stock radiator that has been worked over and is clean, 15# cap, 50/50 anti-freeze and I use a good "water wetter". It has a "stock" water pump and a 180 thermostat.

Suggestions or comments are appreciated gentlemen.............

Thanks for your help,

Lisa

How hot does it get sitting? With a 180 degree thermostat, 185 seems normal to me especially without a shroud. My 383 runs at about 195* with an aluminum radiator and factory fan/clutch setup, I know if I put a shroud on it would run cooler I just haven't had the time to do it yet.

I run a Ron Davis Radiator in my stroker.... it has an integrated oil cooler.. they are not cheap but are the best on the market.

After running it awhile and getting it heat soaked sitting, idling in neutral it will wind the temp gauge over 200. Oil temp will run in the 250 range and the car has a 10 quart pan on it. It's hard to explain but the car just doesn't run right when it get "hot". If I can keep it at 180 life is good. I'll also check into this "Ron Davis Radiator". I just feel the cooling system is marginal and always has been.

Thanks so much for the suggestions and thoughts here.

At minimum get a shroud. Add an electric fan maybe and lower the stat.

I like the shroud and radiator idea. i was just on the Ron Davis website and this radiator is not in his catalog that I could find. I would assume he would build one or does someone make a bolt in replacement. Same with the shroud, stellar idea but again can I buy one or do I need the services of a metal smith? I have been leaning in both directions but I'm trying to source the parts.

Thanks again for the help....

I just bought a 3 row aluminum radiator ( champion ). I had to do a little modifying on mine because I had to buy one using dimensions instead of getting one for my 67 coronet. Reason being it had a small block in it. Now it has a 440. The radiator someone put in during the swap came from a 68 C body. It looks great and flows good. It even came with an electric fan.

My solution was 7 blade steel fan with or without clutch and shroud...fan blades half in/half out of shroud...you are not pulling enough air in traffic or going slow to cool the rad

I was looking at the Champion website and it seems they have the radiator listed for 66 - 70. I wonder how that would fit in the 65? Also what are your thoughts on all electric twin fans vs. the stock single fan? Are the electric fans noisy? I saw the relay kit but are they thermostatically controlled or just run when the engine is running. I'm really not a fan of noisy electric fans. Thoughts on this?

Where to buy these items is the question? There is definitely an air flow issue through the radiator during so or traffic conditions. I would put a shroud on it if I knew where to get one. Any idea's?

I sent dennis an email asking if they make anything for your car

You can wire in a fan through a thermo switch or ign on or always hot with toggle switch. It's all personal preference, but I would suggest with a thermo switch. And always run it through a relay no matter how you decide to wire it. Some fans are noisy some not too bad. I think alot depends on the pitch of the blades. If it cools it down and doesn't sound like a helicopter I'd do it.

the radiator with fans and shroud is 1087.00... We will need to verify outlet inlet location and bracket location. The radiator is 26 inches wide.

So..... I would try the fan idea first and see if that takes care of it

Holy Fk that's some serious dough. The rad and fan ( no shroud I used my old one) was like $240 shipped. I'm sure the quality is different, but if it cools it cools.

if you need a rad...champion has direct fit,I used many, and some have mounts for a shroud...I used a 70 road runner shroud on a 67 dodge 26 inch rad...they have them for all years/cars..mine was 209.00

LOL yeah they are not for the weak hearted.... but they engineered to be the best and are quality built. from the way they cut the sheets to the math to the welds... they are considered one of if not the best on the market... but yeah the money is there for sure especially if you need the shroud and fans and stuff. The one for my car was 720 or so for just the rad w/integrated cooler. These guys are serious business.

The first thing I would do is buy a mr gasket high flow thermostat. Chances are good that your 180 degree thermostat is junk.

.030 440,old purple shaft cam,10.01 actual compression ratio.O.E.M. 22" 3 core radiator,6 blade a/c pump,180* thermostat ,fixed 7 blade fan with shroud.Has never seen anything above 195*,and it even has A/C !!With the correct components working right you don't need aluminum radiators and electric fan's !!

Wow gentlemen, some fabulous suggestions here. I'm not afraid of the money but I'm thinking I have a "small" problem here. I'm seriously going to pursue the Mr. Gasket thermostat idea first and try to find that Roadrunner fan shroud. The fan and clutch seem to work well with the airflow that is going over the engine. The shroud would increase that efficiency and it just might solve the problem. I'm living in a hotter and higher climate then I used to and now the issue is getting hard to ignore. So I'm off on my parts search now. Any idea where I could pull that shroud off a shelf would be a good start.......

Thanks again and I so appreciate all your help.

I guess if the radiator is still good and pristine you wouldn't need to replace it. Mine was an original 4 core that got repaired so many times wound up becoming a 2 core. That and aluminum is lighter dispersed heat as well if not better, and unarguably just plain looks better. That's why I got an aluminum. Sure you can go get a recore job but probably for close to the same money.
