I think I may have just found my 68 Charger!

Looks good from what I can see in the pictures and the long description.

Here's what I know: The car is supposed to be #'s matching EXCEPT the intake manifold & carb. Engine is 383-4bbl. The present owner bought it from a customer of his who had the car from 1987. The car sits in the garage as he's too busy with work to enjoy it. Inspection (Photo's, Video, & #'s verification) is set up for this Thurs. The owner is holding it for me. Guy is nice & is agreeable. Says someone showed up with 24K and a trailer and he refused the offer.

It's priced right. Sounds like he might hold out for his asking price.

I tried negotiating for 3 hours on my car. Seller wouldn't even budge $50.

Keep us updated.

28K is well within my budget and based on over a year of searching the price is almost a steal. I should know by this Friday if I'm pulling the trigger. I'm 90% ready to. Just want to know what the inspector finds.

why is the back of the engine compartment black?
just curious, thought it would be body color.

car looks great best wishes to you.

Curious about which inspection service you are using and the price?

I assume the inspector will verify clear title as part of the process?

Using Auto Appraise (https://autoappraise.com/), which I found in my Hemmings subscription. They're located in MI and slightly over an hr away from the car. Jason Phillips owner of the company is doing it tomorrow @ 3pm. Total price is $840 - Includes In-depth 2-3 hour inspection, 100+ photos (includes underbody), filler / Bondo / previous poor repairs, detailed report, and test drive. I also added in #'s Matching Verification as well.

Owner says title is clear but will be calling the the company this am to make sure to confirm the title is clear. Also will be asking them if they can assist with getting me hooked up with a transportation company.

My biggest issue is to determine how to pay the guy. Hopefully I can wire the $ to the appriaser & as soon as the car is on the truck they hand him a check.

Spoke to the appraiser this am & they can handle the whole transaction soup to nuts! I can wire the funds to them, they p/u the car and hand the owner the $. They will then flatbed my car to their storage facility & set up an enclosed carrier to get it to me. Will have video, pics (title as well) & report by end of day this Friday. #'s verification will take a few extra days.

thats kinda why im pointing it out.
because i know you want this car bad.
i was hoping some of our more knowledgeable people would reply,
and clear it up.

because otherwise the entire cars been repainted then, yes?
and there may be...surprises under all that shiny red paint.

Got ya. The inspection will let me know they quality of the paint job. I don't care if the car was a different color before so as long as the new paint job is decent.

Fingers crossed, if they spend that much time inspecting it I'd think it's a very thorough inspection. I stole my Charger but given the cost of repairing it $28,000 would have been just as cheap. Good luck

Thanks! I'm super stoked & hope it all plays out. Had a hard time sleeping last night. So many questions & waiting on the answers is tough.

If it turns out it's not #'s matching I'm ok with that I think as 28K seems like a good price either way.

put it this way...
i watched a member here sell a charger project a really nice one too,great deal,for almost 18k
that car, needs to be painted, and put together still.
that might eat up another 10k....which gets you to 28k.

while here, you are buying a car you can put gas in and drive.
ive got my fingers crossed as well for you it does look great.

Id think maybe the motor was out and whom ever wanted to clean up the fire wall so he sprayed it black. Only real concerns are rust, bondo. Then how it runs and drives. Cant go by the pictures to evaluate the paint. Hopefully a clean car with no big issues, numbers match registration and you got your car

Psyched for you! If it's a #'s matching car with just minor issues, I'd say that's a great deal!

I looked at numerous 'project' cars for 14 grand. The majority of these cars would need another 15 grand to get road worthy, and another 5 grand to get to somewhat car show status. I never found a project car that I could budget what it needed to get to a reasonable level. One item is I'm not skilled to do anything body and paint wise, and that is where the money runs out fast.
I also looked at many tributes, clones, and basic Plain Jane cars in the 17 to 22 grand range. There was one Coronet that was worthy of purchase at 16 grand, but it was 4 states away in remote Wyoming and shipping was impossible. Otherwise the cars had too many faults and workmanship issues to tackle.
Which brought me to the high 20 cars. The 26-29 grand range seemed to have the most 'honest' cars, although there were the few here and there that were misrepresented.
Long way around to my point that although this Charger is probably far from perfect, it is priced right considering today's market. I know The Rebel has looked at many 35 grand cars that just had too many mysterious items that were not disclosed. The $800 appraisal will (and should) discover many items that hopefully are not show stoppers.
Good Luck and keep us updated.

Bill you hit the nail on the head! Based on all of my searches & the cars I asked here for opinions on, decent looking base Chargers are about 30-40K & R/Ts 50-60. This one @ $28k is priced to sell & ready to drive. The owner did tell me there is some bondo on it but will wait to see what the report comes back as.

From the pic's the car looks pretty clean inside & out. Getting the car at this price allows for me to spend some $ later on so I'm not into the 40-50K range just to buy the car now. I'm just looking to drive it around on nice days, hit up a few car shows...etc... Not looking to win any beauty contests.
