The owner states this is the original #s matching engine it left the factory with, except the intake & carb. The inspection company is going to run the #'s to tell me if the car is #'s matching or not.

I know this has been brought up on your previous possible buy.
From this link, I can't tell.
.I'll leave that for more knowledgeable people if there is a question.
In other words would this car have a numbered engine depending on the build date?
IDK.

Matters little if numbers match. Way more important is the body condition. My two cents is i would not get caught up in this numbers matching stuff. Only VIN matching reggie of course. I really cant wait to see how this turns out. Were routing for ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

I looked at numerous 'project' cars for 14 grand. The majority of these cars would need another 15 grand to get road worthy, and another 5 grand to get to somewhat car show status. I never found a project car that I could budget what it needed to get to a reasonable level. One item is I'm not skilled to do anything body and paint wise, and that is where the money runs out fast.

ha,i spent most of my long day/nite looking at project cars.
up close and personal, with crap falling off each one into my eyes...
im so tired of ny rustbuckets...

anyways that part about the paint and body omg yes.
that was my whole point,
that hes getting a driver and skipping the months and tons of money to finish a builder/plus painter.
thus saving his sanity as well.
i used that particular example because it was the closest to his price on this car, altho i agree,it very well could run 15k and not 10k.

as far as the firewall goes,
it could be as simple as the paint shop guy was a chevy guy.

Well today's the big day @ 3pm. I texted the owner this am that I have the $ ready to pay pending what the inspection report comes back with. Also asked him not to sell the car until I get back to him. As long as there are no mechanical issues or hidden surprises I'm buying it. Ideally #'s matching would be great but at this point I'm tired of looking and this car in my opinion is a steal @ $28K! It has everything I was looking for: Color inside & out, vinyl roof, center console, automatic, Non-Ac, PB, 383-4BBL...etc... The money saved can be put to doing any fixes...etc.

Sent the VIN pic to my insurance agent and he uses Hagerty, who I will be going with. I will not have the car p/u until I'm covered as I'd hate to have the car p/u and 2 sec later totaled & I'm out $28K.

I've got a nice restoration shop close by as well: http://www.automotiverestorations.com/ari/home

What I'm curious is about is the back deck is black. I'm assuming that was an option to have in black rather than the red body color. Where can I find that option listed?

Also, based on the VIN# is there any way to find the orig build sheet thru Dodge or some website?

Smart man. I'll spare you the long story, but a good friend of mine bought a 60s Galaxie 500 at auction in Los Angeles. During transport to Tucson, a car ran a stop sign and overturned the trailer. His car was beyond repairs. The 'bill of carriage' coverage gave him a little less than half of what he paid for the car. The woman who ran the stop sign had no insurance. A lawyer wanted $10,000 to take the case with a '50-50' chance of recovering any money. Insuring the car before it left auction just slipped his mind in all of the excitement.
I would not let my car go on the flatbed until I had coverage, and Hagerty was the only company to insure the car 'before possession'.
Hopefully you will be calling Hagerty today!

You're the reason I went this route as I learned by what you had discovered. I should have put a plug in my message for you but plum forgot. All credit goes to you bud!

If you are referring to the tail panel, it is supposed to be painted satin black between all the trim.

im...looking at that fender tag pic..and that paintjob.
i dont like what im seeing...
improper prep and paint sprayed over it anyways.
hoping the outside of the car is painted better.

have you heard anything from the inspector?

Let us see what the inspector finds....Pictures are ok but in person is a whole different matter.....Based on what the unrestored rust buckets are getting...Rebel is one step ahead of them......

I am a numbers guy but if this car checks out you wouldn't lose out either way.....You buy in in low...

Morning Folks. Received my 1/2 video from the inspector based on a 3hr inspection & road test. He rates the car as a #4. Overall he says it's a good 25 footer but a nice driver quality car. Appears most of the car is all orig. Fender tag & #'s verification very tough to do due to headers & the fender tag had a lot of paint on it. He's going to blow up the images to see if he can decode the block casting date.

Frame wise car has no accident damage, brakes have been upgraded to disc, rails are good, some sags to the doors as the bushings are orig, bumpers fit nice to the body.

Mechanically it is all good, has aftermarket Edelbrock intake, aftermarket carb, aftermarket oil pan, needs new trunk seal, underbody has undercoating, some gauges work, has aftermarket gauges under the ashtray.

Cosmetically has bondo in some areas as well as patch work, so will need body work & paint job but says in its current state it's good for about 5 years. Some dings in the trim, aftermarket speakers, package tray was repainted, some cracks around the radio, need new high beam bulbs.

I'm buying it as most of these things can be worked on in stages over the years. More to come later today!

This car sounds similar to my Road Runner. I have a 383, Edlebrock carb and intake, aftermarket gauges under ash tray, some bondo way low on one quarter panel, and YES I need trunk weatherstrip, too. The Disc Brakes is a big plus I did not have and that's 1 grand in bonus for you! I paid 26K even, so you have a reliable datapoint that the sales price is good, especially in that Chargers bring premiums over other B Body cars.

Congratulations. You bought a good car at a fair price. Please keep us posted on the arrival!
