Got my engine back from the builder and about 400 miles into break in and trying to dial in the timing. Its a 1962 318 Poly, new from top to bottom. 600cfm Edelbrock 1405, cast 4bbl intake, street port /gasket match, cam is a 264 duration, .450 lift, 44 overlap, TTI headers and 2 1/2" exhaust out the back.
For ignition I switched over to Pertronix Ignitor II / coil in the rebuilt points distributor. .035" gap on the plugs.
Is 22 degrees initial / 36 degrees total too much? I can actually get better vacuum readings with the distributor bumped to 30 (didn't see how it turned over after shut off) but my mechanical would darned near be locked out. As it is, my vacuum is about 16hg. Took it out for a spin and no audible pinging, runs nice and strong. My rear tires got a nice workout lol.
I had been running around on 16 initial / 34 total but the vacuum was around 14hg.
