I'm helping a buddy that is interested in building a stroker motor. We are going to use a 400 block . Orignally the thought was to build a 451 but reading on some other options (like using the shorter 400 rods instead for a 431ci) we are having second thoughts. Looking for input from you guys on the stroker motors you have built and the pros and cons of them. This will be in either a 1968 or 1970 satellite and be a pro touring style cruiser with limited time at the track. Yes it will be driven on the highway but will have either an OD trans or a gear venders overdrive.
So let me know your thoughts. Even input on costs is sometimes helpful.
Thanks!

I'm building a 451 for a buddy and will use the 440 LY rods with a cut down 440 steel crank. I cut about 1/8" off the radius of the crank counterweights to make it easier to balance and the mains were ground to fit the 400 block. Pistons are off the shelf JE's I think. We will run an Eddy RPM dual plane with some kind of fuel injection setup and Eddy heads. The cam will be very mild to provide good power for the street and longevity is expected to be good due to near stock valve spring pressures. This thing should run for 50 K miles easy if not more.

Do yourself and your buddy a favor and buy a kit.512 kit,it comes with 4.25 stroke crank, new rods, pistons, rings, and bearings. They make great power even at pump gas levels.512ci,indy ez maxwedge port, solid cam, pump gas, good intake, makes an easy 650 to 700hp.

Hi,

Where would you buy a 512 kit?

thanks

A friend has a 451 in a 69 charger and I am extremely impressed with that motor. Ran 12.4 qtr consistently in a 4000 pound car through street mufflers. I may do the same and install in My demon or IF My ship comes in...a 512 with indy heads...

This is probably the same route we will take. I have most the stuff in my shop now for it. He's thinking on using some '67 closed chambered (516) heads that are cut out with larger valves and rebuilt already and are just sittin on my shelf. The cam will be a mid size hydraulic cam for streetability.
Was curious if anyone has build & ran any other 400 block stroker combos too?

I'm a big fan of the 915 heads so if you got 'em use 'em! This build is dirt cheap too! The only thing you need to get special are the pistons. Everything else is damn near free or you had to replace it anyway. Machine work is the same no matter what but you MAY need to increase clearance at the bottom of the bores. It won't make 700 HP but 450 with all weather drivability should be cake walk.
