Installing adjustable oil pressure regulator

What's it run at hot idle? My 383 was approaching 5-7 psi with 10w30. 15-40 got me up to 10-15. I was gonna put in this spring kit.
Depends on temp 25-40psi. Tough to get the oil hot enough in a drag car. at 150 degrees its around 40psi. Even with a diaper on the pan. If its to low for your liking at idle you need pump with larger rotors (higher volume). The small rotors won't move enough volume at low rpm if there is a lot of internal leakage. Loose lifter bore, big bearing clearance, upper end not restricted. This motor would only make 40psi with the spring turned all the way up until the pushrods (pushrod oiling)were restricted from .090" down to .050". Personally if it comes up quickly off idle the idle pressure isn't that big a deal.

This is true. Cars equipped with a oil light, the sending unit is set to 2-5 psi and the light will come on.
If let's say at idle you have 8 psi @ 700 rpm.Tap the throttle to 1,000 rpm and the pressure jumps to 20-28 psi you are fine in my books.

Boy, it sure scares me tho. So does breaking the driveshaft due to too heavy oil tho. I might leave mine now, anyone need a adjustable oil bypass? Unopened, I'll sell it at 75 percent value in lol

My understanding was it fits on the stock oil pump. Which I have. This is the adjustable part that replaces the spring: http://store.440source.com/Adjustable-Oil-Pressure-Regulator/productinfo/200-1093/

maybe I’m just looking at the oil pump wrong I just can’t figure out where the spring goes

It doesn't replace the spring, it adjusts the position of the spring to change the relief point. I presume the flat nut referenced in post #4 is replaced by the adjustable part. 80 is a little high, but...

Heavy oil will not break the oil pump drive. You'd be surprised how much debris can go thru the pump without breaking the drive. But a big enough chunk of metal will lock up the pump and break the shaft.

That's good to know. So many have said that the stock drive isn't always up to high oil pressure. I believe they even advertise a heavy duty one.

Years ago I changed a stock pump on a 383 because it had failed. Replaced it with a high volume one that just happened to be laying around. First thing that happened was it blew the electric sending unit apart. That was a guage sending unit.

I have a light in the dash of the '62 and was wondering if the factory sending unit would be up to the task of the high volume pump. I already have a mechanical guage and I wanted to hook up the light for a attention getter.

A high volume oil pump does not necessarily mean higher pressure. The rotor design moves a higher volume of oil. A hardened tip drive is a good investment, the hex end can be a weak point.
