Getting ready to install the intake on my 383. The gasket set came with the valley pan and two gaskets for the heads. My builder told me to use both the pan and the gaskets. I've never done that before I alway just used the pan by itself. What's your opinion. If I should use both how is it installed. Thanks guys.

I normally use just the pan, but if there are any sealing issues due to misalignment, use the gastkets. One set top or bottom, or if necessary, one set on both sides of the valley pan.

Sometimes its hard to align the bolt holes on the manifold to head when using all the gaskets. I've been told to put the manifold in place with the gaskets & put something heavy on it to compress all of them overnite. If anybody has a better way, I for one would like to find out an easier way.

to use the valley pan plus the paper gaskets the intake manifold will need to be milled to compensate for the additional .060" thickness on each side. not doing this will result in intake bolt up problems.

all my junk is pretty much bone stock, and I haven't had to use the paper gaskets. just the bathtub with a snot of sealant at the corners. just make sure that the head surfaces are crap free and flat. stuff a shop towel or similar to plug up the holes and have at it.

I was referring to what you see under the manifold. I've heard not to paint it but doesn't it rust? Factory has the insulation pad and the front hold down.

Paint or Don't paint the valley pan? What say you?

NAY! I say! lol

in 5 years, mine has not rusted one iota! I do not have an insulation pad installed, and my front and back hold-downs are painted motor color. :headbang:

You didn't say what type of intake manifold...iron, or aluminum?

Iron, just use the pan. If aluminum, gaskets are used between the intake, and pan, to keep the pans sealing ridges from digging into the aluminum.
