Intake manifold swap? Worth swapping to a Performer from stock?

Edelbrock Performer #2186

This Intake will 'only' outperform a {1963 thru 1967} 'stock' 383 Cast Iron Intake Manifold.

Rated by Performance versus Stock Units
#1...... {1968 and 1969 Casting}
#2...... {1970 and 1971 Casting}
#3...... {Edelbrock Performer #2186}
#4...... {1963 thru 1967 Casting}

BAM!!!!! Took some gathering and work swapping, but I got my 2806301! It's been neglected for awhile, but I'm all over it. Got the blocked heat passage valley pan, the SCE 1/4" carb gasket, and a shiny new 650 AVS! Just have a little cleaning up to address, and should have things together soon!

Don't expect any miracles. The 650 AVS will run out of air right at 5000RPM on a 383 mopar. No reason to rev past 5k at all, I've seen this on the dyno. Throttle response is good for cruising and fuel range but it's not a performance setup for a BB because of the tiny primaries and low CFM. It will run great on the street though once you get it tuned. I like mine for daily driving...but if I were going to the track I would swap on something else.

I am a fan of the #1411. Contrary to popular belief of this forum, I have had excellent luck with them. However, the last one I bought and tried on this 383 wouldn't even run. So I sent it back and got this AVS. I had one before and it worked well for exactly the purpose you just laid out. I think it would be a seriously rare occasion that I would run this one up past 5K anyway. But the day I get set for a trip to the drag strip, I will experiment with an alternative.

I also have always wondered how people learn to love the funky thermoquads and quadrajunks because of that very reason??? I don't get it! I am all about having all four valves the same size for good performance carbs. It just makes sense! But whatever......

So I haven't finished my port matching on my '69 intake yet, but I needed to close up my engine until I get back to it. The cleanest manifold I had lying around was the 2186, so I sat it up on there. That triggered my curiosity, so I put on my 1/4" gasket, the carb, and the air cleaner, then tried to line up the throttle bracket. Now I knew it was a taller intake, but that extra height is essentially for nothing. My throttle bracket don't fit, my cable don't reach, my kickdown won't fit, and my A/C won't bolt back on properly. If I gotta modify all that stuff, I better jave something to gain from all that! I would expect that from something like a Torker ora real high performance manifold, but not from this useless chunk of aluminum! Wow! It's certainly going down the road......and not under my hood!
