Interesting turn of events

I took the fuel line off the other day to make sure the pump was working....I still smell like gas ! There are no obstructions in the fuel delivery !

I did manage to get it running for a few minutes by babying the throttle. I hooked up the timing light once it wanted to stay running by itself (warmed up). I could definitely make some adjustment. It just has to stay running long enough to do so. There was no popping from the exhaust.

"I am running old school dizzy with points and condenser...all new also."
Ah, ok I just assumed that the points and condenser were recently replaced, being all new.

I would have made the same assumption. I put in new points and condenser some time ago, before making my initial attempts to start the car. I have been replacing things for the past couple of years.

Is the distributor hold down bolt tight? Is it possible the distributor has walked at all? I know sometimes I get ahead of myself and forget to tighten stuff. Ha

Man, would I appreciate the hands on assistance ! I've gone it alone since day 1. Well not entirely alone, I have gotten lots of help here at FBBO.

So, I went back out and reset initial timing at 10 btc. The car started easier, but that might be due to it being "warmed up". It kind of loped along while I tried adjusting idle. I seems to be idling very low. I need to put a tach on it to see just how low. I am betting on 500rpm. I need to bring it up more, but if I adjust the idle screw either way it cuts out.

Make sure the balancer timing mark is correct. That means a piston stop tool and a bit of effort. 10 BTC might not be enough, I'd try 12 and see how it runs.

The mark is correct. I set it all when I had the engine apart. I can still take it down a little more, but I threw in the towel for today.

I have several ideas.
Vacuum leak, debris in a primary circuit or sunk float.
I'll text you to see if you would like help later today.
This guy has the worst luck sometimes...

No, I took the day off. I still wasnt feeling well from all the carbon monoxide I inhaled yesterday.

Oh boy....hope you feel better soon. Reminds me of the new engine break-in and seeing the wife rubbing her eyes saying "10 more minutes!"

UPDATE:
It badly needs a choke ! I ran a short wire to the choke lever and pulled it around the fuel inlet line. Two pumps of the pedal and she started right up. The choke pull off opened the plate just after starting and I just let it run. I eventually took the wire off. Now I can go ahead and make the carb adjustments to get it right where it needs to be. Don Frelier called and he provided me some great tips for the next steps.

Thanks to everyone for their input ! I was stymied....and that was before huffing all the carbon monoxide !
