I've ran with them and without. I've even ran this car without for years:

It is driven on dirt trails and muddy areas and so far, no issues.
I could see if one were to drive around gravel, small rocks and such but I haven't had a problem. For a correct restoration and/or a complete and clean underside of the car, I can understand the need/desire to install one.
I left it off of some other cars too.

didn't notice till recently that the front cover for the 727 torque flight trans on my 70gtx is not there. can see the torque converter and gear teeth for starter. interestingly i've seen a number of these covers missing on other mopars that i viewed photos of while searching for cars. like many, i don't drive the car offroad or in rain, but is it a problem it's missing? can one be purchased aftermarket or from another source (Summit, Jeggs, etc).

If , you don't drive on dusty/rocky roads , NO PROBLEM , I haven't run one on my 4 diff. hotrods , helps keep the convertor a little cooler too..

If you have a bad rear main seal or transmission input seal, the spinning converter will sling oil on your headers making a nice smoke screen behind you as you drive. I guess there's potential for fire but your transmission might stop pulling before it slung enough juice on the headers to start a fire. But it doesn't take much oil to make smoke, lots of smoke...

You are looking at it the wrong way... i consider that an "Early leak detection system"

If it leaks that bad there's a way bigger problem than a missing cover.

that is a thought.. and it's often wicked hot here in Florida. interesting that many mopars i've looked at since viewing many on-line before and after i got my gtx last year, have not had one. (viewing photos online and it's often missing). no offroading for me or even dirt roads if i can help it !
