Hi there, I'm still learning the finer points on engine rebuilding/worth. I've found an engine for sale. It's a 1972 440. It's been sitting in a barn for a long long time. So it will need a tear apart, clean up and such. Would this be worth $1000 in your opinion?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

FYI: I'm looking at replacing the stock 318 in my 1972 Plymouth Satellite.

Is it together? all complete carb to oil pan? pulleys, alternator, etc..

Did you check the oil to see what it looked like?

Out here in NorCal I would expect to pay around $400-$700 for a complete 72 440 just to give you an idea. minus maybe exhaust manifolds or something.

I paid $1,000 for a complete 70 here in So cal BUT, as bigmanjbmopar shows us, better deals are out there!
I love "Budniks" quote: "Fill you library befor you fill your garage"

Too much for my area....heck, I have a rebuilt 1970 440 with closed chamber mildly ported heads, Hemi grind cam, titanium retainers, 10.3-1 compression that no one wants to pay 1500 for! And it has a stock bore!! This thing was in good shape when another tore it apart for inspection......

Seems like alot to me ,but the old story supply & demand

I use my Dad (mechanic for 20 years and counting) as a sounding board on all my ideas. But he's a Chevy guy so he doesn't have much experience buying anything Mopar. This is in Ontario, Canada as a note. And there isn't much available I have seen.

I haven't actually seen this engine, it's about 2 hours from me. But I was wondering if it's worth the trip.

Maybe I'll have to drive down to the States to pick up an engine.

Thanks for all your advice guys, I appreciate it.

Two more for you in Grand Rapids MI, couple of hundred miles at the most for you to drive...
Craigslist ad, Grand Rapids, type in 440: "One is out of a 1979 motorhome complete but no carburetor, has 727 transmission, motor ran when parked. Other is a 1971 with a steel forged cranked no exhaust, no intake, and is not assembled. $650 obo for both motors and transmission". No emails call (231)4 nine9-2seven1four.

I purchased a running 440 with 727 out of 1971 New Yorker for $400.00. I would say shop around because better deals exist. I may would offer half of that knowing I would have to tear down and recondition, just saying.

I just got a 69 440 long block for $200.00 plus the $100 hot tank fees the block is standard

2 years ago a buddy bought a complete 77 New Yorker with a 440 in it for 600 bucks.....didn't have a title but still....

hell I paid 250 for a 74 RV 440 with the six pack rods and steel crank! yeah 1,000.00 is a bit out of range for an "old" 440 that you have no idea what condition it is in.

This all depends on many things, is the motor ready to run ? is it factory stock ? is it a modified motor ? you could find a old car that no one has a clue letting it go for $300 as stated earlier, or buy a 440 for 250 and it needs rods and pistons like above.
OR buy a modified 440 6pk for $4500, what is your level of experience with building motors and what do you want from it?
