Hey everyone. I'm having major issues with coils. I'm running/was running the MSD Blaster High Vibration 8222 coil. I did about 600 miles on one coil and it bit the dust so I replaced it with another the very same and it only lasted 200 miles before it started to cause running issues and finally die. I'm using an MSD 6AL along with the pro billet blackout edition and no blast resistor. I don't have faith in the 8222 anymore so I'm looking for recommendations for an upgrade/replacement. I'm a bit particular about how it looks on my engine as you can see from the photo I've spent a lot of time to make sure things are as clean as possible and match nicely together

Biggest thing with coils are to make sure the ohms match what is recommended for the system. They usually go from 3-.o3 ohms easy to mismatch.

you need to install a .8 ohm resistor preferably the one msd sells in my opinion, just to the coil

I didn't believe i needed to install a balast resistor when installing the MSD 6AL along with the pro billet distributor. Maybe that is the cause of my issues

As hallifaxhops recommends, why not just use the correct coil for your Ecu and ballast resistor. WHY do you think the MSD BLASTER coil is necessary?...or who recommended it any why? Perhaps it's time to consider a totally different brand of equipment or are you infatuated with MSD and their claim of higher hp? Since you're concerned with appearance, why not go back to the origional Mopar points distributor, coil and ballast resistor.....worked for years without any difficulties. Hallifaxhops can supply exactly what tou need....listen to him...you'll be glad you did......just my opinion of course.....BOB RENTON

Bob - READ , he is not running a Chrysler ECU and Ballast

He is running a MSD CDI

Large Red to + Battery
Large Black to - Battery

Small red wire to switched 12Volts , not reduced voltage

Ballast resistor not required

Anyways

COILS
The Digital 6A and 6AL Ignition can be used with most stock coils and aftermarket coils designed to
replace the stock coils. The line of MSD Blaster Coils are great for street and mild racing. For extended
high rpm operation the Blaster HVC, PN 8252 or HVC II, PN 8253, are recommended. For more
information on recommended coils, check with our Customer Service Department at (915) 855-7123

I checked out the MSD compatible coil list. I also contacted summit as I only purchased the coil last April. Yet again another happy summit customer. They have already dispatched a replacement for me. I'm actually shocked at how quick and easy that was. I'll be using that as a backup coil as I'm not happy about going through 2 coils in not even 1000 miles.
I did consider using a mopar electronic ignition system but I magically found some money and thought I would treat myself to a nice black MSD set up. I was adamant about having a clean looking engine and bay so the black against the orange and white I thought would look good which I think it does. I'm just not happy about 2 coils going to the junk yard in the sky so quick.

Thankfully I'm not the only one. I truely thought i was after doing something wrong. I literally just finished building this motor and it's been so hard to get the car running. It's all due to the coil. What did you use to replace yours?

Was on a friends car that I installed the MSD 6AL
Pretty sure we went with the Red Oil Filled MSD Blaster 2 Coil , not Epoxy

Mopar Performance used to sell a Black Oil Filled MSD Blaster 2 Coil - Many moons ago

Anyways

I'm aware of what the OP NOTED.......but, the existing system is operating SO well (NOT).....I'm suggesting to go back to something more reliable and trouble free such as, the original points type system or the original Mopar ECU system......this is another example of why mix-matching parts in search of magical horse power gains....is never a good idea....in spite of advertising BS, or what "buddies" seem to think. Not exactly sure WHY everyone thinks the MSD SYSTEMS so wonderful?....yet, it appears that over 70% of the ignition system issues discussed, speak of coils or modules, or being left on the road or no start issues....modern electronics are wonderful.......?????.....

Burnt out non oil cooled coil tells me everything I need to know about that..

My old oil filled blaster coils just keep on truckin'..

@nigel that engine bay looks CLEAN! Very impressive. The white engine bay really makes the black and orange pop.

I went through a few coils myself (MSD oil filled and Accel yellow), but since switching to the MSD epoxy filled 8222 (same one you're having trouble with) in 2019 have had no issues. I use the recommended 1 ohm resistor and am running the mopar chrome ECU with an adjustable voltage regulator set to 13.8V with motor running. A weak battery or bad spark plugs or wires could also cause the coil to work harder.

Will, and do.
As will useless attempts to make the plug gap larger than necessary.
I totally agree with that. I'm running NGK UR6with .039 gap.
The battery is new with a resting voltage of 12.6 and running voltage between 13.6 and 14.4V. I'm also running a Tuff Stuff 130amp 1 wire alternator. Everything was new in September 2023 last year excluding the coil which was April 2024. The plug wires are perfect also and the correct MSD wires for the 6AL and distributor

I would use the MSD #8207 E core coil [ or Summit equivalent # sUM-850500 ]. I have used the 8207 on a few engines, including one that runs 119 mph over the 1/4 mile, is strret driven, been on te car 10 yrs.
Bit silly using a powerful CD [ & expensive! ] ign system....& then killing it's performance with an inefficient cannister coil....

I was looking at the e-core could and am kicking myself i didn't purchase one before. I might try the MSD 82073 and see how it goes. Fingers crossed it runs better than ever.
