I have 3 of these motors 1989 1990 out of trucks that all run I'm not that familiar with small block mopars and was thinking of building one for my 66 charger not to race just to cruse and sound good anyone have any suggestions on what to do or should I do it at all ? I would like to maybe do a 4 barrel and mild cam ,headers just don't have a clue Thanks Alan

Magnum engines didn't start until 1992.

You likely have roller cam LA engines.

The Magnum engines all had pedestal mounted rocker arms and better heads.

Take some pictures with the valve covers off and the sides of the blocks where the info is .
It doesn't much matter a 318 is a 318 unless it's the bad ads from the mid-late 60's(sorry for the life of me I can't remember the name of the motor I'm sitting here thinking and it's just not coming) anyways yeah a nice intake carb headers and a mild cam will liven it up a bit maybe 220 hp or so (depending on the cam) but I must say the 318 does sound good with old school cherry bombs on it I can still remember my first car I didn't bother installing a radio after I did the exhaust . There great little motors very reliable and cheap to maintain. I run small blocks a lot I usually run 340's and 360's but have a few 440's hanging around my 340 charger was keeping up with the 440 charger if that tells you anything and the 440 car was dunked at 548 hp to the wheels(I think mines about a little under 100 less for now ) but you can build these small blocks for power.
And the added bonus of the small block Is your car will handle way better without all the extra weight in the front end. (Yes you could build up your front end but why spend extra money on a car your not running around trying to race thing .
Good luck and let's see some pictures of the charger I'd like to get a 66 charger one day

With the typos and all, I'm guess you mean "bad ***"?
The early A 318 was a Polyspheric head engine. It was a good design but the LA was lighter and cheaper to build.
Sorry, a 318 is not just a 318. There were several variables, several different versions even in the 1967 and later LA engines. They varied from 8.8 compression in the early versions to 8.0 in the mid 70s, back up to 9.3 in the last run, known as the Magnum 5.2. The Magnum was essentially the same short block as the earlier engines, but with a roller camshaft. The cylinder heads were superior with bigger valves and better air flow. The exhaust manifolds were redesigned and many feel that the 1992-93 Magnum exhaust manifolds flowed as well as the early 340 manifolds. This is why the Magnum 5.2 was rated at 230 HP as compared to the more common 150-170 HP rating the 318 had from the 70s through the late 80s.

Moly ring roller motor regardless. Use its potential cam it accordingly put decent intake exhaust carb and ignition and it will sound good and fry the tires. Put some quest heads on it.

My charger has a long way to go and when I get started on it more I will take picks do you have any suggestions for a cam ? something with a good rumble and bark

If ts a roller cam you can save the lifters and regrind the factory cam. If it,s a flat tapper the Comp Cams 268H is a good choice.
