Looking for help/info on spring retainers, I broke one

simply adding a cap will dramatically change geometry. whether that would cause a retainer to break in two I don't know. one of the problems I've found with those rockers is getting the scrub pattern correct with high lifts. for me a roller tip is much easier to correct because the pattern is much narrower. setting up the scrub on stamped rockers is even worse and that's why I limit the lift which limits the tip travel.

Are they for 3/8 valves or 11/32 valves. I'm thinking of putting on a set of 906s I had done before I bought these eddys. They were ready to put on untile I changed direction. They need to be resurfaced because they sat so long and have some rust pitting but they are heavily ported. It would be a nice comparison. What do you consider cheap? No Idea what they normally go for compared to steel. PM me more info. Thanks Ken

What would be max lift to use with my rockers then. I had a set of 1.6 roller tip rockers but they had clearence issues with the head and I didn't want to remove them at the time so I got rid of them. I can grind out the hole to get more clearance when they come are off now but will probably just look for some 1.5s anyway. Thanks

those isky rockers were designed for the '63 and down head with the removable rocker shaft stands. that's why fitment issues can occur on '64 and later heads, although it's not difficult to fix. I won't use any of those iron rockers, isky /crane/erson, on anything above .525 lift and i'm a guy who likes and keeps a couple sets of the cranes laying around. they're terrible at getting the fulcrums ate up and have too much travel across the valve tip for my taste. with that cam and springs move on to something else .

Yes...there's lots of info on the net. Just Google 'rocker arm geometry' and start reading. Even the Chevy sites that have info are good.....as much as I hate to say that lol

I would start at the bottom of the page with Part 1.

Do you mean how the rocker sweeps across the valve tip. I checked to be sure the rocker stayed the same distance from center thru the entire travel, top to bottom.

Look at the under side of rocker 3/4 of an inch and see if their wear marks from rocker body hitting retainer. If their is the spring height with retainer needs either shim under rocker shaft or different total spring height.

I cleaned the rockers and see no evidence of contact except the rocker that hit the spring when the retainer failed. I also cleaned the other retainers to look for impact marks and found 2 others that are cracked and ready to fail.

Do some research ... 10 degree retainers seem to be more prone to failure than a 7 degree.

Latest thing are radial locks or they call them bead lock retainers.

I thought 6500 would be safe but usually shift at 5800. Rev limiter chip at 6000. It looks like my wear patterns on the tips are pretty much centered, I thought that ment I was good. Thanks for the info.

It appears that the lash cap is riding on the valve locks instead of the valve tip itself. Can you verify that the lash cap is in contact with the valve stem tip? If not the lash cap with hammer the locks until they and the retainer fail as you are experiencing.

What cylinder heads are these? Iron?

I ran a complete Isky setup on my old car and that engine saw 7300 every pass and had well over 300 passes on em. The rockers looked like what RT K is using but hard to tell what his are from the pics.

I used to have to set the geometry up on those isky's with high lift cams. what a pain in the *** compared to a roller tip.

How much lift? Mine was considered somewhat big back in the early 80's at .660
