On a '68 body, The VIN is only on the VIN plate on the dash. The body numbers on the radiator support and trunk rail match the Sales Order (SO) number, which is found on the fender tag. You MAY find the VIN on the engine and tranny depending on the plant and time of year the car was built.

The only way to tie the body to the VIN is via factory paperwork like the window sticker, broadcast sheet, invoice or an inspection IBM card. The IBM card is rarely seen but it does happen.

Just a ? but weren't they also stamped, if original, on the top back of the engine, below where oil sending unit is and maybe the right side of tranny somewhere? Thats cool, never seen one of those IBM cards.

Pretty sure they didn't start doing that till 69' Ron. Even then, not all the 69's ended up with the VIN stamped back there..

As stated above....VIN stampings on engines and transmissions seems to be inconsistent in 68. It seems to depend on the assembly plant as to when the VINs are stamped.

69's are stamped on a pad on the passenger's side of the block.
