Time to revive this thread. Here lately I'm finding more and more auto parts made in other places like Mexico or Canada and even Italy....better than made in China I suppose but it's getting harder and harder to find auto parts made in the states. Recently I went to Academy to get a new Old Smokey and didn't see any. Maybe it's too late in the season for them to stock them but they are made in the Houston area so getting one won't be a problem. Besides, grilling around here is a year round thing.
You're right Cranky, getting hard to find things that are North American made.
I was born in the USA and my parents moved back to Canada when I was very young. I feel a strong sense of committment to our countries when I purchase something, it's always a research project before shopping, and it's not always easy to tell due to labelling etc. Let's face it, a lot of American and Canadian made items are forced to add foreign content to stay afloat! The best we can do is support ourselves the best we can.
Like you, if I can't find "Made in Canada or The USA" then I go for Mexico, or Japan or whatever...anything but China. I think that's the only way to take the power from them, although they almost own the planet from a financial perspective. No sense adding to it though!
My list of brands looks like this..
Vehicles- Mopar-Chevy (easy now) 70 GTX, 96 chebby pick me up, 56 Bel Air resto mod project,2 Harley bikes (a lot of the Harley bling and clothing is China now)
Tools- Snap On and SK, Channel Lock and some Craftsman
Shop Equipment- Eagle Compressors, Miller welding machines and gear
Work clothing is Carhart and Red Wing
Home furnishings are Canadel and Durham (Canadian made solid wood)- try to find appliances that are made "on shore" lol
Groceries- I keep it North American- Canadian and American brands- sounds funny, but we buy more of this than big ticket items!
The list goes on I guess, but I do what I can.
Satman... Can't figure out how to add your post quote to this...
You're right, the purchase is about the quality for sure but we have to be willing to pay for it, and maybe have less of it! That's what has led us down this path to begin with!! That, and our governments shoving cheap product under our noses. If they limited the amount imported then part of the issue would be solved, plain and simple. That's part of freedom of choice, but we should take that responsibilty and committ to ourselves, not some other nation.
