I had a matching #'s 70 Charger 383. The engine numbers matched. I put the transmission from that Charger in my 70 Challenger R/T not realizing it could be match numbers as well. I sold the Challenger.
Doing the body work I sanded the trunk rails I found the VIN number. The O or 0 was reversed with the G, the rest was correct. The guy on the assembly line had to set those numbers in up in reverse order for them to be correct after stamping. He got 2 reversed.
The radiator support was a little bent. I replaced it with a used one, not realized the VIN was stamped there as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe in 67 the factory stamped the VIN in 6 or 7 places on their cars.
We kept the original 383 but built a 440 Six Pak for the Charger. Sold the car and the new owner never came back for the 383. He knows how to get in touch with me. Anyway I taught my young buddy how to build engines. His first engine, that 440-6.

That is not a mistake. Reversing the year and plant stamping on the trunk and radiator support was standard practice.

VINs were not stamped on '67s. The sales order number was. I believe they were only stamped in two places. The radiator support and behind the bumper.

Well I can tell you mine are stamped as.... XP29N0G143### on the dash tag, fender tag, door sticker and the Production Sheet. Now on the trunk lip and radiator support it is stamped G0 143###.

Ha I have to type faster, that old Alfred E. Neuman slipped right in there.
There's a few strange things with these cars I noticed.

My 70 Plymouth has the VIN tag on the dash, the option tag under the hood, the radiator core support & under the trunk seal (as far as the body) that match. If there are other numbers on the '70 bodies, I'm not sure.

my 71 rr has the body numbers including cowl number reversed eg g1 ****** instead of 1g******
