I had a matching #'s 70 Charger 383. The engine numbers matched. I put the transmission from that Charger in my 70 Challenger R/T not realizing it could be match numbers as well. I sold the Challenger.
Doing the body work I sanded the trunk rails I found the VIN number. The O or 0 was reversed with the G, the rest was correct. The guy on the assembly line had to set those numbers in up in reverse order for them to be correct after stamping. He got 2 reversed.
The radiator support was a little bent. I replaced it with a used one, not realized the VIN was stamped there as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe in 67 the factory stamped the VIN in 6 or 7 places on their cars.
We kept the original 383 but built a 440 Six Pak for the Charger. Sold the car and the new owner never came back for the 383. He knows how to get in touch with me. Anyway I taught my young buddy how to build engines. His first engine, that 440-6.
