I have a timing light and no matter what I do the idle is not right. The carb is fine, haven't messed with that. Could The spark plugs, spark plug wires, or coil bad?

It sounds like its skipping pistons when I idle, or get up past 1500 RPMs. The spark plug wires are all on the right pistons.

Sounds like you need to re-check your wiring order.

Firing order is 1 - 8 - 4 - 3 - 6 - 5 - 7 - 2 for BBM and has a CCW Rotation.

Hopefully, you haven't wiped out a cam lobe! But, just start with the basics. If the coil was bad, it wouldn't crank, but picking up an inexpensive replacement unit at your local auto parts store would be an easy check. Spark plug wires could be an issue, I would check outside at night without any lights under hood and see if you see any serious arcing.

If you took out your distributor, check to see that you put it back in correctly. I had a friend whose car wasn't running correctly and it turned out he put the distributor in backwards.

I don't believe I've wiped out a cam lobe. Been Driving the car like a granny lately Cause I've had to start paying for my gas. I have a new coil it's a "MSD Blaster 3" My uncle said I would need new spark plug wires before I put that in. I'll make sure the order is right, which I'll do when i get home. The car runs nice, but it jolts too much. I'm thinking it's just a bad spark plug nothing too major.

tell me what you think about putting the MSD Blaster 3 in with stock spark plug wires. If it'll be fine, i'll throw that sucker in and see how she runs.

If your plug wires are old (or cheap) they could be cross-firing. That is, the energy jumps from one wire to the next resulting in a misfire.

could you post a video? that may help narrow it down....

I agree with the others, sounds like your wires arent in order/arcing or the dist is backwards.

Here's a video. I also have been having a "Dieing whale" noise coming out of where my intake is - I just replaced the valve cover gaskets because the LH side one was ripped to shreds. (starts at 1.36-1.45)

Sorry the video is upside down, working on rotating it ATM

What I was hearing sounded like an exhaust leak to me and maybe running a tad rich.

Exhaust leak? How do I fix that? I replaced my header gaskets when the starter went out and torqued them down tight. ANd just replaced the valve cover gaskets. I haven't messed with the carb, and it was running fine up until about a week ago. Then it started smelling rich, and the noise started.

crap. i forgot my work computer doesnt have speakers! lol

ill listen to it when i get home...

My nephew is running into the same problem, He just put new headers on his drag car and new gaskets. We couldnt see it till the sun came down. but sure enough he had flames comming out of the head. Maybe try some metal gaskets instead of paper ones or vise versa. On the rich issue, changing my coil and ign box cleared that right up, but you may have to jet it down.

Right now I have the metal/paper gaskets. tonight i'm going to check and see if t here are any leaks. I have a coil, but I believe it is too strong for my stock sparkplugs +wires. MSD Blaster 3

I think the blaster would be fine as long as it hooked up to the ballast resistor, I have all metal gaskests on, but im running manifolds. Start it and while its still cold run your hand over by the header and see if you can feel where its comming out, but you have to be quick about it!

If the distributor is in backwards (180* out) the motor won't run. It may spit and fart, but it won't run.

the cable from the distributor to the coil will not fit on my other coil. they have different outlets... this is probably a stupid question but how do i get one that works for the MSD coil?

kinda sounds like some of the spark plug wires are in the wrong order

You need a Blaster 2 Coil (or just a stock replacement) or find the coil wire that came with that Blaster 3 ... judging from it's well seasoned appearance it's probably long gone.

Doesn't that boot and male end just pop right off? if not don't use that coil just get the msd one like your old one. Get all new wires that match the distributor cap and get a new coil that has the same inlet that one looks used? do you have the old points style distributor? if so did you make sure you points are gapped correctly? contact points are still good not worn out?
