My 1971 Road runner

So I finally was able to get the tailstock on my 4 speed changed.
If you remember the shifter box mounting holes were damaged when I bought the 4 speed.
Feb 26th (4).jpg

And I was able to find a good replacement tailstock.
Feb 23rd (3).jpg

So, after ordering the correct gasket kit from Brewers I took the 4 speed to my good buddy Kevin's place to get it switched.
Here it is on the bench ready to go back together again.
April 22nd (4).jpg

Here's a look at the internals - Kevin said it was in great shape.
April 22nd (2).jpg

He did change out the bushing in the tailstock as well.
April 22nd (3).jpg

And here it is back together again waiting for me to pick it up.
April 22nd (1).jpg

I got it home and set it up to get it ready for paint.

Let's go back to 152 and 153 and the bracket p/n 3464141. I only have one on my car and the parts manual only indicates one(see13-64-72 under R) In the diagram it does not show any but it does on the cornet. What is correct?

Mine came with two of them.
They get bolted to the pad-impact 13-68-18 like my photo in post 153 shows.

Is the left side the same part number(3464141) as the right side since the parts manual only shows one in description?

My engine guy who assembled the engine, Brad came over yesterday and degreed the new Isky cam.
Looks like its gonna be installed straight up as it already has 4 degrees of advance ground into it, even tho the cam card says it has a 107* lobe center.
It was set at 103*

So I finally had some time to put some primer on the 4 speed.

Then scuffed it up with a scotchbrite pad and then spayed some cast paint.

Let it dry overnight then give it one more coat.

Nice work.
I love this car. I had a 71 too. Same gold color as in post #36.
Keep up the good work.

Thanks Dfr, it's been alot of work so far, but I'm in the last stretch of getting everything ready to go back in the car.

I did some horse trading and got myself a gull wing.
May 22nd (5).jpg

The mounting holes are broken.
May 22nd (8).jpg

Probably due to the fact that the mounting surface was not flat.
you can see the raised surface of the reinforcement plates. & the screwheads are not flush.

May 22nd (7).jpg

I've got new pedestals and mounting plates on order thru Dante's.

But before that, a little putty and clean-up at the tips.
May 22nd (9).jpg
May 22nd (10).jpg

So, I put some putty on the wing tips and ground down the heads of the countersunk screws and reinforcement plates and sprayed some primer.

My new pedestals came in from Dante's, but were a little too shiny, so I scuffed them down and painted them and the wing with the same SEM that I used on the Air Grabber set-up.
May 28th (9).jpg

I think they turned out all right.

Yesterday was the nerve racking day to drill holes in the trunk lid for the gull wing.
But first I had to put the wing together.
The first hiccup - the adjustment plate and the hole in the pedestal were slightly off.
I went to put the bolt in and it started going in fur-cocked......

June 8th (3).jpg

So I had to take a Dremel and open up the slot.
Here's the before and after shot.
June 8th (5).jpg

Do a test-fit - it should be okay.
June 8th (6).jpg

Next is put everything together and on the wing.
June 11th (2).jpg
June 11th (3).jpg
June 11th (4).jpg

Next step - get some tape on the trunk lid and start to lay out where the holes will be.
June 11th (5).jpg

Next verify the locations by putting the wing on to see if my measurements were correct.
June 11th (6).jpg
June 11th (7).jpg

Just a couple of photos to see how it will look.
June 11th (8).jpg
June 11th (9).jpg

Next - I held the wing in place and had my assistant (wife) draw around the stud holes.
That would be the final location for the holes.
June 11th (10).jpg

Then say a prayer and get out the drill....:praying:

Starting with a very small starter hole, then move up in sizes.
The final hole size is 5/16".
Now put the studs thru the holes to check.
June 11th (11).jpg
June 11th (12).jpg

It fits!! :bananaweed:
June 11th (13).jpg

Now to remove the tape from the topside and get started on the underside.
June 11th (17).jpg

When I drilled the topside holes I went all the way thru the ribbing on the underside.
Then I used a step drill to get the hole big enough for the flanged nuts to go thru.
The finished hole size is 1" in Dia.
June 11th (18).jpg

For the reinforcement plate that gets mounted to the underside I used stainless riv-nuts for the fasteners.
June 11th (19).jpg

Then install the plates and button it up.

June 11th (25).jpg

And the finished product - thank God it's done.

Luckily, the trunk torsion bars don't have to be adjusted for the added weight.

Fantastic work! Went threw the same installing mine, stressfull drilling holes in fresh paint!

Wow! Looks great!!! Pretty big pucker factor drilling through new paint!

You got that right Chad - I'm glad I put on the masking tape - it sure helps keeping the drill bit where you want it.
I did apply some touch-up paint to the edges of the drilled holes before the final install.
I let it dry overnight.
