So since the Coronet is up in the north woods awaiting its turn in the paint booth I got bored and decided I needed to buy another Mopar. (well worked out that way anyway). Basically I got tired of spending $300 driving the truck to work and wanted to start saving gas. So I picked up a 2002 Dodge Stratus R/T.

Well for starters...its a mitsubishi, which isn't a bad thing but I wanted to get it out in the open for the crowd that will point it out. The second and most pertinent problem: The engine....I got the car super cheap because it wouldn't run. So I ordered some parts, cued the music and started making my knuckles bleed.

The bad part is it has a bunch of bent intake valves...belt skipped time and allowed contact. So now I have to figure out how much this part will cost me and then re-assemble. Why is it i don't know how to just sit on the couch!

How did the moter gets sideways!? :D

I'm guessing coupe, not four door since you mentioned Mitsubishi. Is it a 2.7 or 3.0 engine? Tons of rebuild parts and valve kits on eBay for those things.

I just finished helping a Bud last month with his daughters.
Same belt issue.
Cost for parts was $700 w/ head work

Its "Half a Hemi"
Remember: "Half a Hemi is better than no Hemi"
LOL

"Plug is directly centered "

Yeah its the coupe. It got sideways because somebody back in the 80's thought that'd be a good idea....and they were wrong...but it was cheap!

So the best course of action I have been able to figure out...picking up the used engine today. Going to rob its heads and re-assemble. I managed to get a whole engine with 98k on it for $300 vs. $540 for the head work from my local machine shop. If this was going to be my family transportation I'd pop for the rebuild to make sure it was perfect but since this is my beater mobile to drive to work and beat the crap out of...cheaper = better.

3.0...I would NEVER buy another 2.7 again. Those are nothing but atom bomb's with "2.7 v6" written on them

Yeah they wanted $540 at one shop and nearly the same at the other to get the heads up to snuff (provided they aren't cracked). Since there is a chance of them being cracked and I don't need to waste money on the pressure check, I'll just go the used route. And at least this way i can re-sell the short-block I am not using. Or save all the parts and have the ability to make a second running engine if needed.

Either way this car will be back on the road with a freshly tuned up engine and brand new tires for under $2k including the cost of the car, tax, title, gas to get it...etc

Well this thing is turning into a major pain in my tookus. After getting all back together it has a starting problem. I have been able to get it started by fiddling with it but it won't start normally and it stumbles if you hit the gas. So far we have about 8 hours of diagnosis time on this thing and have not found the problem yet. I am starting to lean toward the fuel pressure regulator....

I think it might have taken me less time if had wanted to plop a real Hemi in here and get it running than this damn mitsushitty
