My GY8 '71 Road Runner

Today I tackled making a patch to replace the rotted lower flange on the right side inner wheelhouse. I made a poster board template then traced it on sheet metal and then cut it out.

I then decided to patch the lower left corner of the right side door pillar. This section was rotted, as well.

Not much to report. I’ve been working on cleaning up yard, mulching, replacing lamp posts, etc. I did get the replacement trunk panel blasted and primed. I do have to remove the end pieces and the trunk pan flange from it though. That’s for another day. I’m also waiting on trunk gutters that I ordered from Classic Industries almost 2 months ago. They are telling me they will be dropped shipped from AMD directly. That was almost a week ago...

Started working on getting the trunk pan installed. The AMD pan pretty much fit right in.

I fit it back in and, of course, I ran out of shield gas. I was planning on going to the supplier this morning but they were closed for the holiday weekend. Damn! I’ll have to wait to weld it in next weekend.

I got the trunk pan plug welded in and started to clean up the welds. I’ll have to go back and touch up a few areas but it’s not too bad, for my abilities I guess.

Been their done that also. Used a bit of the wire in one hand while welding to help fill in the holes that want to appear out of no where. So glad that is over was really tired of welding then grinding. That grinding metal get's past the mask and you goggles. Keep up the good work and it look's grate. Blue.

My friend went to great lengths to make sure that the 71/72 B body sheetmetal from AMD fit properly. He test fitted them several times and most of the parts were templated from his NOS and nice used original pieces. The trunk floor pan looks good, nice work, you are making some real progress on the car, it won't be much longer before you get beyond the heavy part of the metal work.

Yes,I asked AMD if they were interested in doing any parts for 71/72 B body cars and they said they were interested, so I introduced them to Gary.

I bought a gauge cluster from him several years ago at his house. Wicked nice guy! He was explaining to me all about the quarters he helped AMD develop. He also showed me the ‘71 Petty tribute superbird that he built for land speed records. He had just finished it. That thing is really awesome.

They have since built a 71 Daytona land speed alchohol Hemi powered funny car. They are great people and great friends.

Some more progress, started mocking up the donor back piece of the trunk (I’m not sure what it’s called). I had to remove the lip that was left on from the donor’s trunk pan. I was able to remove it in one piece! I also mocked up the trunk pan extensions and inner quarter extensions. Ran into a small problem on the left side (forgot to take a pic). At the back, there was a 1/2” gap between the trunk pan extension and trunk pan. This gap was at the back and then ran to nothing about a 1/4 of the way, down the seam. After about an hour of measuring and remeasuring, I’m thinking that the left rear corner of my trunk pan was messed up. The small recess stamped into the pan in this area is way off from the location of the one on the right side. And the flange on this side is about 1/4” longer than the flange on the other side. I was able to rebend the flange to close the gap. I need to do (try) some more hammer and dolly work to make it look better.
