My GY8 '71 Road Runner

Not everyone's fenders are feeling springtime fresh! My fenders aren't feeling fresh today!

I’m still plugging away on the fenders. After getting rid of the rust, I fixed (or tried to) all of the big dents, dings, missing flanges, etc. After that, I sprayed them with epoxy.

Missing some metal here:

Both lower corners are pretty messed up:

Have to weld this flange, split on both sides:

Is supposed to look like this:

And the Driver’s front is still showing damage from where it was hit:

After getting all that fixed, and more, I sprayed the fenders with epoxy (both sides):

Before blasting the fenders, I decided to make a backstop to try to catch media that I was losing. I combined two of my daughter’s old soccer nets into one and covered it with a tarp. It worked pretty good, I’m recycling about 90% of the media I’m using now!

I also recycled all of the metal I’ve removed so far:

Next I have to finish cleaning up the headlight housings and get them in epoxy. I’ll say it again, I can’t believe the amount of worked I’ve put into these so far!!

Thanks for looking!

Any chance someone with a 71/72 Road Runner or Satellite can give me the measurement of the fender at the inner brace from lip to lip (red arrow in pic)? Like an idiot, I forgot to measure mine before removing the brace.

If you need anything else ask away. Even if you want it pulled a different way.

I see that mine are different measurements from side to side........:realcrazy:
Hopefully that helps Chad.

Thank you both!!!! These are perfect. Much appreciated!!!!!!!

Yes, but they are going to look like that only once.
Wait till it's on the road - goodbye to looking clean under there...

I got the inner fender parts and head light assemblies blasted and in epoxy.

In between getting some painting done around the outside of my house, I’ve been getting a few things done on my car. Last weekend, I put the driver’s side headlight assembly back together, including the piece I had to completely fabricate. Yesterday I reassembled both fenders: welded in headlight assemblies, inner braces and the bracing that goes along the door opening.

And for shits and giggles, I threw the fenders on. Now that they are on at eye level, I can see more dings and crap that need some work:

Once I get them more securely mounted, I’m thinking it will be easier to hammer and dolly.

Thanks for looking!

Always easier to work a panel on the car. We used to have a stand we could bolt them to that was on wheels, but I liked on the car better most of the time.

I was using the folding work stands with a panelbeater bag for weight. Terrible! Almost impossible to get the fender in the right angle and remain there while hammer and dollying. Plus the stands move across the floor.

That is a LOT of metal work to be proud of. If you sell that car even in 30 years, the buyer should see the before and after photos to know exactly how much rust you painstakingly replaced! What a feat.

Thank you! It hasn’t been easy but I think it will be worth it in the end.
