I did the same thing only I did a 40 ford with a 392 hemi since 40 fords to me is a great car to build as a hotrod and I love the old hemi as well. Midlife crisis no just the love of cars. couple of pics on my 40.

mar for now yes i am thinking i will leave the grill as is

but i will have a couple big cracks welded up and then refinish that area in grey

my buddy dave ( basketcase ) may have some scrap mesh material at work
so i may paint the grille mesh checkered black and white or all red to match the wheels or maybe black and red checkered ???

Black and red checkered sounds good, When thinking of the chrome mesh i was thinking then that black and white checkered emblem sitting in the middle of the grill would look real good to. Im sure it will look good with what you have planned though, your others seem to make the smile appear when looking at the girl on the wing, well, i mean looking at them, the cars. :)

how about some expanded metal, for the grill, in a smaller gauge... then paint it

Not really, any metal supply shop, will have expanded metal, in Stainless, mild steel or even aluminum, you can get it in various sizes & thicknesses, even at places like Orchard Supply or Even at Tractor Supply, they both usually stock various forms of it, at least at our local stores they do... I will look & see if I can find a photo to post somewhere...
