Need help installing the ashtray pad cover on 1968 Charger

Hi all,

The ashtray cover on my 68 Charger was always hanging on by a thread since I bought the car. Just last week, it fell off completely and noticed a number of ball bearings on the floor. Assuming that is what allowed the cover to slide up and down the track of the ashtray. I included a picture of it before it fell off.

Does anyone have any experience with the procedure to reinstall the cover with the ball bearings so that it works properly again? Also, how many BBs are there on each side? I want to make sure I didn't lose any. Any pictures are helpful as visual instruction saves me a lot of time.

I figured it out after messing with the pieces. The slide bracket that goes up and down on the ashtray sets into side channels on the side of the ashtray. The ball bearings allow it to slide up and down and also provide a compression fit in the channel so the slide won't pop out. The padded cover compression fits into the same ashtray slide channel and over the slide bracket ball bearings. Important: The reason the pieces kept coming apart was that the side channels on the ashtray were bent outwards allowing the slide bracket and ball bearings to fall out. Make sure you bend them back into place if you are having issues. Also check the "ears" on the slide bracket to make sure they are square with the bracket as well or it will fall out of the channel. Below are some pictures of how the slide bracket sits in the ashtray channel. I will post pictures of the pad in place and mounted in the car.
