I'm having some brake light issues on my 74 Roadrunner. :( Here's where I'm at now:

  • I've cleaned the socket and am using new 1157 bulbs. Tail lights and turn signals work, but no brake lights.
  • I have good 12VDC to the brake switch.
I suspect the problem is either the switch or the wiring, but thus is where I need the help. Looking at the wiring diagram, it looks like black wires are used to light the tail lights on both sides, and brown is used for the turn signal on the pass said and dark green for the drivers side. My question is what color is used for the brake lights? According to the diagram, the brown and dark green wires are used for both turn signals and brake lights. Is that correct?

My next question is if I have a wiring issue, can I run a new wire from the switch and back to the sockets, or is there some box or special something that the wire must go through to make it work in conjunction with the turn signals?

Thanks

If 74 is the same as 73, then the tail light wires run through the steering column, and are integrated into the cancel cam mechanism because they also have to produce voltage for both the hazard and turn signals. So, the brown and green wires for the rear lights originate in the steering column as do light green/light brown for the front lights. the wire from the brake light switch (pink) comes from the feed on the bulkhead through the switch (white)and into the steering column. You might want to check the connector to the steering column and also check the switch/connections on the cancel cam mechanism in the steering column. Also I would check to make sure the brake light switch works and is adjusted properly on the brake pedal.

Found the problem. :) The switch got rotated a bit when the plunger was all the way in and the part that slides was catching on the back edge so it wouldn't come all the way forward. I put a little grease on the plunger shaft and used a file to round off the edges of the housing and now everything is working fine.

Hi,

Have you checked the adjustment of the brake light switch on the pedal? It has a very thin adjustment nut. You should be able to press in the plastic plunger in on the pedal switch to test it.
