Am about to tackle changing the complete rear end from drum to drum in my 64 Sport Fury.

Removing the old tapered axel assembly and replacing it with a newer style rear from a 65 Coronet.

I'll be doing the job by myself and am looking for any suggestions on what's worked for a solo removal/install.

Thanks...

Did mine solo. Not much to it really, the shackles studs will likely break unless new, so the rear drops with the floor jack provided the shocks and brake hose are disconnected.
Then 4 nuts in the front spring bracket to remove it all.
Or, you can try to loosen the ubolts and try to muscle it off the springs but it is awkward. Easier and lighter with the axles, drums and backing plates removed. The center section is heavy and will try to swing or rotate the housing down so be careful.

I left the springs in place and used a floor jack to raise the rear and slide it sideways to get it out. Getting the shackles out of the springs can be difficult.

Did the same swap for my '63 Plymouth to '65 Coronet some 10 years ago. Perfect fit and upgrade also installing '64 sure grip rear; but changed out the leafs at the same time to HD's as it was the perfect time to go ahead and do that.

suggest rebuilding your springs if sagged
adding a leaf (wagon springs)
adding plastic inter-liners
(the old pad type are probably history)
you can spray the leaves with spray moly or graphite
cordoba rear sway most likely will fit
have new u-bolts handy or available
there are cheap thin ones- stay away
if you are trying to save your U bolts wire wheel first and penetrating oil
do not cross thread the brake lines
do the -turn backward till they click then tighten - trick

Actually a rear sway bar from 68-70 b body is a bolt on for the 62-65 b bodies.

Was there a factory rear bar 68-70?

Get some harbor freight mover's dollies for $8 each with the coupon.

3 should work- one for the center chunk area, and one for each brake drum area.

Stack some 4x4 sections to get the right height.

I always find uses for those things and at $8 the price is less than buying 4 casters if you need casters.

Takes some finagling to clear the springs, but becomes a one man job.

Where did you buy the kit that had all the rebuild stuff for leaf springs?

I just went to the local spring shop and they ordered the plastic liners for me at $1-2 each. They also bent up the ubolts and only charged $20 for all 4 I think.

I’m pretty sure the b body’s never had an option for rear sway bar. Go aftermarket and get a 3/4-7/8 bar, they help a lot!

I love the Hellwig sway bars. I had a set of Addco bars and the front kept shifting and moving around, never installed the rear because I wasn't happy with them. I installed the Hellwig and they're much better engineered and firm. Catching a Porsche in the turns with a near stock 65 Belvedere was pretty cool!

Hellwig is about 30 minutes from my house in Visalia. I should stop by and see about getting a rear bar for my narrowed Dana 60 in my Dart.

I think they'll be able to find something for you. They did a bar for my friend's Demon with a narrowed rear, I think they used an E-body bar. Ask for Ben... let him know I sent you. (Michael with the Belvedere)

Thanks! I will ask for him.

"Fascinating Captain" in the words of Mr. Spock. I had installed a bar in the front of my '63 Fury years ago that made a nice difference. Wondered about a rear bar and what would be involved with installing. Thanks; I'm going on a hunt for one that will bolt in!
