We did, but for a multitude of reasons, the barn-house isn't working out for us, so we're starting fresh. After this, we'll slow down. At least that's the plan.

We're going to put the barn-house up for sale some time over the summer. This new place did have a 150 year old barn (as was the original house) & that got demolished last week.

The original house was an unlivable neglected wreck and there was absolutely nothing worth salvaging from that dump. Late last year, we did have the local fire department do some practice work on it; chopping holes in the roof and smashing walls before it was demolished.

We looked into it, but the entire floor structure was rotted and bug eaten. In reality, there were only a few halfway decent beams on the upper level. We looked into barn salvagers, but the problem is that they would have to take the structure apart piece by piece to get at the few good pieces of wood. The kicker is that they would charge us to take it down and it would take weeks for them to take it down whereas the excavator did the job in two hours. We have salvaged a bunch of granite posts and sill pieces from the barn and we will use at least 4 of them at the entrances of the two driveways (circular driveway). I was going to go with a 12' wide X 14' door in the center with 14' ceiling in the center to accommodate a motorhome, but I'm leaning more towards a trailer now & a 12' X 12' door with 14' ceiling in the center. the outboard doors will be 10' wide X 8' tall with 12' ceilings

I would have just grabbed a few of the rafters after the barn was knocked down. The people you contacted were just trying to gouge some money from you.


Whats sad is that the previous owners neglected the property to the point of where it got to that point.
Kinda like letting a wing car sit out in the elements

The entire property has been neglected for at least 25 years and it was long overdue to level everything which is what we are doing.


We went through all sorts of crap with the local Hysterical Commission and to be quite frank, after what they put us through, I just wanted it ripped down ASAP so we can get going on the new structure. I wanted to email them pictures of the excavator demolishing it, but Submit talked me out of it.

Wait until your all done building everything and have your CO.. Then do it! Submit must know about small town politics, tweak them and they'll screw with you.

The Hysterical Commission's ruling last September was that the structure was historic and they said to to rebuild it, or at the end of a year from their ruling, we would be allowed to tear it down. Over the winter, some of the first floor joists and flooring collapsed which really made it unsafe. We tried going through the building inspector to get the building condemned, however, we were told that we had to hire a structural engineer to write up a report saying that was unsafe and submit it to the town. After nearly 2 months of waiting and me prodding them weekly, we were "allowed" to tear it down. After all that, it couldn't come down fast enough

That will be sweeeeeet! Do yourself a favor, and workout a way to do an eyebrow (unibrow lol) like you have on the house, and make it stick out enough so you can leave the doors open and not get wet in there when theres a mild rain. My overhangs about three feet, the big vehicles fit under it and I don't have to worry about anything short of a gale force wind in mild temps. My 2 cents.
