Octane rating when mixing Regular gas (93octane) with Racing fuel (110) octane.

Was talking with a friend on this, he says the Regular Gas (93 Octane) will Degrade the Racing gas (110 octane). I always thought it was the opposite. If you have and 20 gallon fuel tank and have 10 gallons of Regular 93 Octane gas and add 10 gallons of Racing Fuel at 110 Octane; what would be the Octane rating of the mixed fuel in the 20 gallon tank ? I'd say it would be somewhere around 101 octane. What say you on this ? I know you could run all 20 gallons of Racing fuel but at $12.00 per gallon that would be a $240.00 fill-up, can't afford this. Also, the 10% Ethanol in the 93 octane gas comes into the picture.... Also, what about mixing with Aviation gasoline.... I've heard good and bad on this, something like AvGas has additives to keep airplane carbs from icing up in higher altitudes. Any views on this ? This mixed gas is for my 69 Charger with a 383 Magnum engine, stock rebuild.

Bob,

Nice group on this forum eh? Makes you want to ask questions and get involved helping each other when they jump your **** and tell you how stupid you are for:

A) Asking such a fucked up question in the first place.
B) Wanting to run anything but what they do in a “stock” motor. How dare you.
C) Not being a high school educated engineer like themselves.
D) Wasting your money, it is yours correct, probably earned it, gives you the right to spend it anyway you want. Enjoy.

Attached is a simple calculation for your Octane question. Is it 100 percent correct, who cares (only the people that have to be the smartest person in the room, in their own mind, and on a friendly forum).

Kind of silly, don’t you think? Hope you stay involved and contributing to the forum. Dumb questions and all.

Who here pee'd in your soup?
having ran many stock 383's over the last close to 60 years in b and C bodies, i have found with the correct tune, they run as good on plain 'ol 87 grade as they do on 90+ premium, with no detonation. there is NO extra benefit from running anything else, other than the lightening of your wallet.
this has been proven time and again by the "butt meter", as well as the dragstrip.
remember, i'm talking STOCK 383's with "advertised compression of 10-10.5 : 1, which is really closer to 7.5-8 : 1 if you are lucky !

One thing I do know is that when running Aviation fuel you better have a quality set of forged pistons. I found an excellent reference online that answers all your questions. It was originally published by Hot Rod magazine in September of 1982, reposted by Hot Rod online in 01/2023. https://www.hotrod.com/features/av-gas-september-1982-982-1168-44-1/

I don't understand why a slower burning fuel with less chance of detonation means that you need "a quality set of forged piston." That article (thanks) didn't mention that problem either.

Nobody mentioned the obvious benefit of running “racing” gas. It smells good, and the chicks dig it. Heck, even my Mom loves the smell of racing gas.

^^^^^bullshit , i ran a lot of 115/145 in a stock 68 form. S 383 fastback back when , turned the tailpies blue , no other noticble diff...really couldn`t tell any perf. diff either...

With no other changes,my avs2 383 seems to like non ethanol better. All I find here is 90 octane,so far no pinging.

You know, I just checked back into this forum after being away for awhile ( took a break from building cars and bought a few bikes to redo) and this was the first thread I read, as I mix fuels also. Well, I actually feel exactly like you do. Some real A-hole comments. In fact, that's what kind of I remember from when I checked in almost every day. Seems like some of the "long timer clique club" were always jumping on every thread and trying to bully guys with other opinions, out. I used to love this forum and directed a few people here for parts hunts, but damn, all the infighting really kills the whole cool vibe this site used to have. Sorry for the vent, I'm going to hi-perf big block parts, if it's still here !

It just started up recently. I joined in August last year and everything was fine until about a week ago. Seems to be only a couple of people. I just ignore them. Not with the ignore button, I just don’t respond to them or pay attention much to what they say, but every now and again (rare) they may contribute something useful. Although there was one person that I actually used the ignore button on because he obviously was on here just to make trouble and not contribute anything to the forum.

To make sure we all are referencing the same thread:

1. Was talking with a friend on this, he says the Regular Gas (93 Octane) will Degrade the Racing gas (110 octane) Only A claim, debate as one see's fit
2. I always thought it was the opposite. OP is allowed to think whatever he wants, it's a free country, same for those inclined to contest it with or without reason, your choice
3. If you have and 20 gallon fuel tank and have 10 gallons of Regular 93 Octane gas and add 10 gallons of Racing Fuel at 110 Octane; what would be the Octane rating of the mixed fuel in the 20 gallon tank ? OP's first question. I am of the mindset there are no stupid questions, but there are often stupid answers. I personally responded mainly this question in detail
4. What say you on this? Asked with no mentioned qualification required
5. I know you could run all 20 gallons of Racing fuel but at $12.00 per gallon that would be a $240.00 fill-up, can't afford this. A Claim, hard to dispute
6. Also, the 10% Ethanol in the 93 octane gas comes into the picture....A Claim, hard to dispute
7. Also, what about mixing with Aviation gasoline... Another question
8. I've heard good and bad on this, something like AvGas has additives to keep airplane carbs from icing up in higher altitudes. A claim, dispute at will.
9. Any views on this ? Another question asked with no qualification
10. This mixed gas is for my 69 Charger with a 383 Magnum engine, stock rebuild. Another claim hard to dispute but open to question its initial justification
11. Tks OP's Proper civility

Not sure why a few got so riled up or thinned skinned in this discussion.
