It looks like a decent tranny. Didn't get a good enough shot of bellhousing to tell if its big or small block. Built for the street. Nothing special about the planetary gears, 4 pinion and 3 pinion. Kick down lever is ok at 4.8, no real difference from a 5.0 lever.not sure what year it is but i assume its been modified for part throttle kickdown. The older units would not downshift unless you basically floor it.

It is a big block trans so it will bolt to any B or RB engine, don't know about those "Hemi Specs". True Hemi transmissions, as well as other HP applications had a special input shaft and also a 4 pinion rear planet. The Forward and direct drums were unique as was the intermediate band and band apply lever.

"hemi-specs" refers to the 5 clutch disc front drum... 4.8 lever, never heard of it.. there is a 4.2 and 5.0, but have never heard of a 4.8... I think its a typo... another aspect of the "hemi" 727 that is different but not annotated on that transmission is the governor... hemi governors had a shift rpm much higher than the other engine/727 combinations.. do not see it written on the case that it has been given a different governor though.

tailshaft housing is out of a late 70's truck :D

also, if it has sat for 9 years, replace the front pump, tailshaft housing, and shifter lever seals... as well as the trans pan gasket... insurance

RaceDodge, very few people know about that governor, even people who've built 727's for years. I've been chucking mine up in a drill press and cutting them down with a file in the center section like the HP governors, and have had really good luck doing that.

are you adjusting the spring or using the same spring after modifying your governor? are you modifying the governor to the "hemi" governor's weight?

I have thought about modifying governors due to the fact the "hemi" governor kit costs around $50 and I have a crapload of old governors lying around, but I have not done anything because I had a reputable 727 trans builder state he did the same back in the 70's and actually blew up some of his transmissions due to not having the exact spring/governor weight combination.

I've not changed the springs or gone for exact weight, just been eyeballing how much I cut off. Been doing it for about 30 years now, and I've never blown one. As far as I can tell, the lighter weight is going to let it rev a little higher before shift, and if you leave the spring weight the same, you won't need as much cut off the governor as the factory application. Maybe I've just been lucky in doing mine. My main concern has always been to make sure I have enough surface area to be sure the governor weight can't get cocked in the bore, and to be sure I don't scuff it and let it get stuck because of rough surface.
