Any of you people living in Ontario had any experience with the MOE pulling you over for pollution control checks? This is really bumming me out! I waited over 30 years to get myself a hot rod, now this. Are all you Ontarians aware of this? This is all new to me.

Good discussion of it over at this forum:
http://ontariorodders.activeboard.com/t47781184/emmissions-on-older-cars/

My state tried to do emissions/safety testing back when people were chiseling out their unleaded-only filler necks to fit leaded pump nozzles :icon_fU: and ramming plumbing pipes through their catalysts :bootyshake: to make 'em straight-thru decorations. IIRC that only lasted maybe two years because the real culprits -- the rustbuckets with their busted mufflers dragging the concrete and their bumpers held on with bungie cords -- got cleared off the roads real quick. With the junk hauled off to scrapyards where it belonged, the emissions tests ended.

That said, I understand and support air-quality measures in general (after all, I like to breathe), but what government agencies everywhere need to recognize is that our cars are the cleanest running machines out there -- even if we crank out 100ppm of carbon on each drive but only put a few hundred miles on the machine each year, that's way better than the filthy diesel rig belching smoke in front of us on the uphills, because he's putting a quarter-million miles on his carbon-spewing monster annually.

Whats the scoop? My 71 440 was built with no pollution controls?? I heard they were pulling people over but are they targeting people who removed the factory controls????

as a person that drives one of those deisel belching rigs,we have more restrictions than anybody else in any industry. The epa has set emission standards on the engines in truck so high that even the engine manufactors said there was no way they could meet that level. There are states that have anti-idling laws in place that we can not idle are trucks in temperatures higher than 80 degrees or temps 40 degrees.,but yet the person in a car can idle no matter what the temp is.Next time you pass a truck look for the clean air sticker on the side of the hood, that what that means.when it is real hot/cold outside ,turn your air/furnace off and then try to sleep 7-9 hrs like that.

roadrunnerman, if your truck is running clean, then kudos to you and it's definitely not one of the ones I'm talking about. It's those "black cloud specials" (like if you didn't see a truck there, you'd swear a forest was burning down) that need inspection, not the maintained rigs that let out a little puff of gray when they shift gears.

bigredbird,i know what you mean.in the years past,if your truck wasn't blowing "black smoke" well you just didn't have a truck. Yes there are still some that are out there that still do.As far as canada,i s'pose they can pull you over for an epa check, validated or not.

Like I said, I just heard about this the other day. We need to start scoping this out. All you Ontario guys, we need to do some research. What are they targeting? I need to find out what smog equipment was even on my car when new. Like 71dodgechargerrt said, what pollution control was on his '71? I don't know myself. Mine is a '69.

OK all you veteren hot rodders. I need to know. When did smog pumps, cat converters and such stuff first hit the scene. I'm showing my ignorance here but I don't care.

Don't know. We need to do some serious investigation. Apparently this is not news to evryone. Just me.

iirc smog pumps and lean burn came out in 74, 75??? gents??

YRC! (You recall correctly!) '74 was the first year for the first type of catalytic converter, and that's when all of those nasty hoses and valves and caps started taking over our formerly clean and roomy engine bays. :icon_neutral:

Air pumps (AIR) started 1966, EGR 1973 and catylitic convertors in 1974.
Requirements varied by state (USA)

There is a petition going around to stop this crap,The problem is from what i understand, if you install a newer engine into an older car,If the newer engine came with emissions and they were removed ,you can get a fine ,even if the pcv valve or cannister has been removed ,another ticket. These are the tree huggers in our province, that probably dont have a clue what makes an engine run.If your car is original, you shouldnt have a problem, but this is just the start. If you would like to contact the MP in ontario that is organizing this petition is John O,Toole 905-697-1501.you must be a resident of Ontario.we need to sign these petitions

I believe PCV valves were the first pollution control device. They appeared in the mid 60s. I like them because they help keep the engine bay clean. AIR pumps (Air injector reactors) were common in the late 60s early 70s cars. I remember the first air pump I saw was on a 68 Camaro that had a six in it. It took a little research for me to figure out what the hell it was.

From a Californian: Welcome to my world...........

so you're in Colorado, California Dave?? :happy7:lol j/k

don't worry, at the rate we're going, all of the US is going to be like Cali. soon; minus the broads and the weather!!!
