I realize this might ignite a firestorm but let's give it a go anyway ;).

It is my opinion that it is both a crime, or should be, and a sad situation when someone does this crap. If their life is so screwed up that they need to try to get some love by doing this then they need an *** whupping and therapy..in that order. Or, they should be required to immediately attend basic training at the FT Leavenworth, Kansas disciplinary Barracks.

What say all of you?

I think history has shown this is a dangerous situation to be involved in. I was at a personnel inspection at Naval Station Dam Neck, VA in 1985, and while we were in the ranks we heard some guy screaming all sorts of profanities at the top of his lungs, then things went silent. We didn't find out what happened until later, but the situation was some dweeb Lt. Commander who was inspecting some students saw a female Personnelman (PN) chief wearing a Purple Heart ribbon, and he went into what's now known as Stolen Valor mode on her. He tore her up for wearing a ribbon that she couldn't have possibly gotten because women don't serve in combat, and did so until someone explained to him that she had been on the Navy bus in Puerto Rico that was shot up in 1979 and she had gotten that Purple Heart after taking an AK-47 round through both sides of her face. That's when said Lt. Commander shut the Hell up and slunked away.

The bottom line is there's no way of telling whether someone is entitled to wear the uniform, or decorations, unless you're looking at their service record, and just as cases of people impersonating service members are going up, so are the cases of ******** wrongly accusing someone of doing so. So to me, unless you know for 100% certain that someone is "stealing valor", you should shut up.

Just check out "Stolen Valor" on "You Tube"

Many of these incidents are insecure individuals that are not happy with themselves and look elsewhere for self gratification and self worth.

Many incidents are in Shopping Malls,or Side Walk stores.

And quite frankly, easily identifiable because of "Uniform Errors"

Bruzilla: I remember that Rosy Roads incident.
We would occasionally RON (Remain Over Night for non-flyers, Bru, I know you know the LINGO) at Rosy Roads, PR and we were briefed on that incident.

Dec 1979 incident and then the U.S Marine getting shot in August 1981.

So to me, unless you know for 100% certain that someone is "stealing valor", you should shut up.

I agree with you Bru. My comments are directed at those who are obviously engaged in this stuff, like a dude with conflicting award badges and patches.

I don't think it's bad if someone is wearing camo pants and boots, but if they are trying to pull off a uniform that's wrong.

As long as they are not getting veterans benefits, discounts, etc,... and abusing the system, I don't care how those sorry sacks dress up or who they claim to be

I am a viet nam vet. been there and did that. was spit on at the philly airport, it was not cool to be a vet at that time in history. and we were warned about wearing our uniforms while traveling home. but now it's cool to be a viet nam vet. WTF. I agree with both sides. unless you know 100% that the person is an a$$ just walk away. they will get there's at some time. I run into people with wrong ribbons and other stuff on their uniform or jacket that they wear to show off their ribbons. not happy with stolen valor but some people are just a sad piece of humanity. thank you for your service all vets. after watching some of the stolen valor videos posted by ski, these people believe what they say. how sad that they live a life through others.

Well said!
This new ERA of thanking a Vet did not come from the Obama generation either.
It came from the G.W. Bush ERA
Yeah, hell yeah, when I was in for 20 yrs, no one thanked us...no one.

I didn't need thanks "By The Way"
I was proud to serve my Country!

But if I see Stolen Valor, I'll call the RAT out.
And, c'mon, I work everyday at Edwards AFB, most of you guys don't even know where it is and even more, that it exists.
I'm surrounded by VETS, WAR HEROES and Top Notch USAF Test Pilots.
Aint no stolen Valor here

To me it's a kind of mental illness when these fakes try to build up their own egos based on complete bullshit. I'm guessing some of them have a latent case of the guilts for being draft dodgers or whatever. What I'm really glad for is that these days active duty personnel and vets are for the most part getting the thanks and respect they deserve.

Hey Ghostrider....Did you really expect any FBBO member to defend an asshole like this??? :angryfire:

I think that you knew our guys would do the right thing. American Pride is on the upswing. Hopefully next year at this time we can see our faith in the country swell even more.

I think there are some people that think if you are wearing a camo jacket, boots, and jeans you are "stealing valor" which I think is BS, and they are just being douche bags. People have been wearing camo a long time, I have some nice camo shirts i like to wear (not army camo, real tree, lol, I dont think I won anything army camo, just not my style)

BUT if you are wearing a uniform and getting attention due the military, you are dead wrong!! And I enjoy watching the ids of them get slapped around, I know that is bad of me, but its funny... Also if you are doing it to savve $1000 on a victory and printing up a fake mil id, again your a douche bag, lol...

Also, there is another type, the type that just tells girls they are in the military to get ***, I get that, if they have no game and need to lie to get in a girls pants, they get way bigger issues than faking valor, still not right..

WHICH leads me to the last ones, and that is mentally unstable, or just pathetic, like someone saying it on the internet when they never stepped foot in a recruiting office or on a base or in training..

I have never been in the military, nor do I want to be or want to portray that I was, lol.. I was working supporting my family, while them guys were putting it on the line, good for them, and I appreciate it...

these vids are awesome to watch, lol..

Such big talk from a person that seems to have seen so much of the World, but won't talk about his own service record. I got my pink card, where's yours?
I digress, it really pisses the snot outta me. I'm talking about the guys that are 4 star Col's with 69 Ribbons and some of which are only awarded to Enlisted that think their tough $h!t, yeah it bugs me.

One of the more RECENT ones, a Vet notices a guy in a Shopping Mall.
He's wearing the Desert Cammies with wrong patches.
And he was wearing the wrong shoes, the scuffed or brushed TAN leather boots instead of the CORRECT Gray/Green brushed/scuffed leather.

Yeah: A DEAD GIVE AWAY

Kind of like Seventy said: This Dude was going shopping and trying to get 10% off his shopping and sucking up the respect and admiration he was receiving.
Pathetic!

IMO;
Useless POS Posers & BS LIARS plain & simple, demented delusional a--holes
maybe even a mental illness, trying be someone they are not & won't ever be...
BUT they will ultimately get theirs in the end...

Thanks for all the links Ski...

Yeah, it is becoming a real issue in some circles.

It is a crime:
"The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 was signed by President Barack Obama on June 3, 2013. The Act makes it a federal crime to fraudulently claim to be a recipient of certain military decorations or medals in order to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit."
-The key wording is tangible benefit.

Now, this was the 2005 ACT by G.W. Bush:
"The Stolen Valor Act of 2005, signed into law by President George W. Bush on December 20, 2006,[1] was a U.S. law that broadened the provisions of previous U.S. law addressing the unauthorized wear, manufacture, or sale of any military decorations and medals. The law made it a federal misdemeanor to falsely represent oneself as having received any U.S. military decoration or medal. If convicted, defendants might have been imprisoned for up to six months, unless the decoration lied about is the Medal of Honor, in which case imprisonment could have been up to one year. In United States v. Alvarez the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 28, 2012, that the Stolen V"

Yes, they are Low Life people Budnicks...
Just like you mentioned.
Pathetic.

I will never understand why people lie and bullshit about stuff, but this stolen valor thing is just a slap in the face to all Americans.
I never served but I thank God for those that are or have served in the US armed forces.

Those that say they were awarded "fill in the blank" are the first ones to run in the opposite direction when confronted by the enemy!

No, but I know folks have strong feelings about it.

I have stong feelings about for several reasons, not the least of which is my own service. Another is all of the posers I have seen and spoken to over the years. Another is because it happened to me once. i used to be a member of the South Carolina Honor Guard and as such spent alot of time in dress blues. Traveling to and from duties you inevitably have to stop and pee or eat or get gas or what ever. I never let my guys appear out of uniform for any reason so I and they were right and tight even at the gas station. This fat country wanna be tough guy blocks my way as I'm coming out of the bathroom and begins a whole tirade about how he knew that soldiers were not allowed to wear the dress uniform off base and I must be a faker and why don't I get a life etc..etc... I stood at parade rest while he finished speaking. He says, " You got anything to say about that asshole?" I reached into my pocket and pulled out my CAC card and showed it to him. He got a little white in the face at that point and I just told him to have a nice day and left the station. Had i been alone i might have had some choice words for him but two of my guys were watching and listening behind him and I felt like setting a professional example would do more good. You just never know who your going to meet. Oh, one more, ..on the way home on emergency leave from Iraq I was sitting half asleep in Atlanta airport when a guy plops down on the bench beside me and starts asking all about my patch's. We got to my combat patch for the 449th Combat Aviation Brigade, the largest CAB in theater. and he told me I was full of ****. I sighed and asked him to look it up on his IPad. He did, and it matched. He apologized and left. I caught my plane.

My stepfather is a vietnam veteran (1st infantry div) with dioxin exposure and he can tell one of these guys in a short conversation. He would never call out someone on this however he just walks away. The DD 214 tells the story to those that matter anyways, namely the VA hospital and other veterans benefit services. Folks that misrepresent their service are just deluding themselves.

If people tell the same lie over and over it becomes their own truth.
